🚗⚡ REAL WORLD EV vs PETROL COST TEST ⚡🚗
I owned a Porsche Macan S for over 2 years… and every motorway trip came with the same feeling:
⛽ “How is it costing THIS much just to drive?”
So I decided to test my BMW i4 eDrive40 properly on a real-world 124 mile return journey between Surrey and Leighton Buzzard using ALL 3 driving modes:
🌿 Eco Pro
⚖️ Comfort
🏁 Sport
And honestly… the numbers shocked me.
💷 UK Home Charging (7p/kWh):
• Eco Pro: £1.70
• Comfort: £2.00
• Sport: £2.93
⛽ Porsche Macan S:
• £45.83 for the same journey 😳
That means:
🔥 Up to 26X cheaper in the UK
Even using average USA electricity prices:
🇺🇸 EV cost = $3.89–$6.70
⛽ Porsche fuel cost = $28.21
Still around:
⚡ 7X cheaper for US drivers
The craziest part?
Even driving in SPORT mode with proper acceleration and real motorway driving… the EV still cost next to nothing compared to petrol.
No manufacturer fantasy numbers.
No “perfect conditions.”
Just real roads, real traffic, real costs.

BMW i4 - 3 modes. Same road. Real money. Real costs!
Just did a proper real-world cost test — not WLTP, not manufacturer claims.
124 miles, Surrey, UK to Leighton Buzzard, UK and back, testing Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport mode separately.
Charged overnight on Octopus Energy at 7p/kWh.
The numbers:
• Eco Pro: £1.23 for 65.5 miles
• Full 124-mile trip total: £4.34
• Porsche Macan S equivalent: £45.83
• That's 26x cheaper on home charge
Also included USA equivalent figures for anyone across the pond.

Real-world BMW i4 charging test completed ⚡
6 minutes at Ionity Fleet, Hampshire, UK added:
🔋 13 kWh - ⚡ ~45 miles of range
Actual cost using BMW Ionity tariff: £5.96
That got me thinking…
People always say: “Rapid charging is expensive.”
But compared to petrol and diesel for the SAME range:
⛽ Petrol (BMW 420i): ~£9.19
⛽ Diesel (BMW 420d): ~£8.56
⚡ BMW i4 + Ionity: £5.96 (Using BMW Charging Card and Ionity Discount)
Even using HIGH SPEED public charging… the EV was still cheaper.
The surprising bit?
This stop was only around 6 minutes 👀
