A Life Update From Us (Nitin & Soni)

Hi everyone,
We’ve been quiet for some time, and many of you have been checking in. Thank you for all the love and concern. ❤️

We’re finally ready to share, because the last few weeks have been the most intense and emotionally draining phase of our lives.

It started like something we’ve all heard before… lower back pain and left leg sciatica. I assumed it would settle with rest, heat, and normal medicines. But within a few days, things took a very unexpected turn.

The pain began increasing rapidly, my posture became bent, and standing straight became difficult. Then the symptoms shifted from “pain” to something far more frightening — numbness, tingling, and loss of sensation in areas that should never feel numb.

Soon after, I started noticing numbness around the buttock area, saddle region and private parts, and that’s when the real fear kicked in. The biggest shock was when I began facing urinary retention — I could feel something was wrong, but my body wasn’t responding normally. We rushed to the hospital in the middle of the night, and catheterisation had to be done for immediate relief.

At that moment, we realised this was not a normal back issue.
This was a neurological emergency.

After investigations and MRI, doctors explained that my disc at L5–S1 had severely compressed the nerves. I was diagnosed and treated as a case of Cauda Equina Syndrome, and because the symptoms had progressed quickly, it required urgent surgical decompression.

I underwent spine surgery the very next day.

The surgery was not simple. The doctor told us it was a serious case — the disc had broken into pieces, it had badly affected the nerve area, and some part was extremely thin/stuck, making the procedure delicate. Hearing all this while being in pain and not even able to understand what my body was doing… honestly, it was terrifying.

Post-surgery, the real recovery journey began.

For many people, recovery is just “rest and walk a bit.”
But for me, recovery meant living through things that are hard to explain unless you’ve experienced them:
• Numbness in the saddle/genital region
• Anxiety every few hours about bladder function
• Catheter care and clamp–declamp routines
• Bowel issues and constipation that became severe
• Loss of normal sensation to pass stool/urine
• Walking slowly with weakness and foot numbness
• Random nerve firing sensations, sparks, pinching, pressure — all confusing and scary

Mentally, the hardest part was not pain…
The hardest part was not knowing how long it will take and whether the body will fully respond again.

And then… while all this was going on…

My wife was pregnant. ❤️
And during my recovery phase, she also had to go through her own biggest medical moment — C-section delivery.

So imagine our home situation:
One person recovering from spine surgery and nerve injury…
And the other person recovering from a C-section…
Yet she still managed my medicines, hospital visits, catheter routines, cleaning, mobility support, and everything in between — while battling her own pain and fatigue.

There were days we both were exhausted, scared, and emotionally breaking.
But we kept going.

Just when we thought we were stabilising… we faced another shock.

I developed sudden high fever with chills, vomiting and weakness, and it became so serious that I had to be admitted again — emergency admission, tests, ultrasound, cultures, ICU monitoring. It turned out to be infection related, and because I already had catheter history, we had to take it very seriously.

Those ICU hours changed us.
It reminded us how quickly things can spiral if you ignore signs.

Today, I am back home. Still recovering.
There are still challenges — bowel management, bladder recovery, mobility confidence, nerve healing, preventing UTI recurrence — but we are moving forward one day at a time.

Some days are better. Some days are confusing.
But we have learned to celebrate even the smallest progress:
A little better posture.
A little more control.
A little more strength in walking.
A little more hope.

If there’s one message we want to leave everyone with, it’s this:

✅ Please don’t ignore sudden changes in your body.
✅ Back pain is common — but numbness, bladder changes, saddle symptoms are NOT normal.
✅ Health is everything.
✅ And a supportive partner is the biggest blessing.

We’re sharing this not for sympathy, but because real life isn’t always perfect pictures.
Sometimes it’s hospitals, sleepless nights, fear, patience, and silent strength.

Thank you to everyone who checked on us, prayed for us, messaged us, and stayed concerned.
We truly felt your support.

We’re still on the road to recovery — please keep us in your prayers.
And we hope our story helps someone take the right action at the right time.

With love,
Nitin & Soni❤️
