Kalyana Karnataka pulses turned into nutritious energy bars
Bengaluru, September 7, 2026: Pulses grown in Kalyana Karnataka are set to get a value-added makeover, with the Bengaluru Bioinnovation Centre (BBC) developing six varieties of nutritious energy bars using locally produced pulses.
The initiative is being undertaken under the Kalyana Karnataka Bioeconomy Mission, in collaboration with the Karnataka Department of Agriculture, as part of the Kalaburagi Pulses Initiative.
The newly developed products use four major pulses grown in the region — pigeon pea, black gram, green gram and chickpea. The energy bars also contain ingredients such as roasted peanuts, jaggery, oats and pumpkin seeds.
Officials said the products have been developed without artificial colours, artificial flavours or chemical preservatives.
Each 30-gram bar contains approximately four grams of protein, between 122 and 123 calories, and around 1.8 to 2 grams of dietary fibre. A special high-protein FOS variant contains approximately 4.85 grams of protein per 30 grams. These nutritional claims are subject to final testing by an accredited laboratory and the applicable FSSAI requirements.
The project aims to address a long-standing challenge faced by pulse-growing regions such as Kalaburagi. While the region produces pulses in large quantities, much of the produce currently leaves the area as raw agricultural commodities. As a result, a significant portion of the value generated through processing and product development is created outside the region.
The BBC is now exploring ways to convert locally grown pulses into higher-value, shelf-stable plant-based protein products, potentially creating new opportunities for farmers and local businesses.
Karnataka Minister for Home, Information, Biotechnology and E-Governance Priyank Kharge said agricultural production in the state is strong, but value addition presents a major opportunity.
According to Kharge, innovation is not limited to developing new products. It also involves understanding consumer demand, identifying market opportunities and finding new ways to increase the reach and consumption of agricultural products.
He described the initiative as an example of how Bengaluru's innovation ecosystem can work with Kalyana Karnataka to transform locally grown pulses into higher-value products.
The initiative is also expected to create opportunities for Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), self-help groups and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to enter pulse processing and food-product manufacturing.
Dr. Mohammed Adil AA, Managing Director of the Bengaluru Bioinnovation Centre, said the objective was to look beyond pulses as raw agricultural commodities and explore the range of products that could be developed from them.
The BBC believes the model could eventually be adopted by FPOs, self-help groups and MSMEs in Kalyana Karnataka, linking scientific innovation and product development with local economic opportunities.
The broader Kalyana Karnataka Bioeconomy Mission is focused on developing a region-specific bioeconomy roadmap based on the area's agricultural potential. Along with pulses, the mission is also focusing on products such as red banana and sugarcane.
The roadmap includes improving agricultural productivity, developing disease-free planting materials, promoting bio-fertilisers, strengthening processing and value addition, utilising agricultural by-products and improving market linkages.
The next phase for the energy bars will include shelf-life and stability testing, nutritional analysis at an accredited laboratory, consumer acceptance studies, packaging development and the FSSAI licensing process.
Once these processes are completed, the technology for manufacturing the products will be made available to interested FPOs and entrepreneurs.
The larger goal is to ensure that more of the economic value generated from Kalyana Karnataka's agricultural produce stays within the region while creating new income and business opportunities for local farmers and enterprises.

IAF Sarang Helicopter Display Team Reaches Egypt
The Indian Air Force’s Sarang Helicopter Display Team has arrived in Egypt to participate in the 2nd edition of the El Alamein International Airshow, scheduled from September 8 to 10, 2026, at El Alamein International Airport.
The world’s only five-helicopter display team will showcase precision flying, close-proximity formations and synchronised aerial manoeuvres using India’s indigenously designed ALH Dhruv helicopters.

Sarang’s participation highlights the capabilities of India’s indigenous aerospace industry and further strengthens the growing defence and diplomatic ties between India and Egypt.

Rajya Sabha MP Mansoor Ali Khan, in a post on X, recalled seeing Rahul Gandhi walk through Karnataka and people from every section of society joining him. He said the response was far greater than anticipated, with people identifying with the message and purpose of the Bharat Jodo Yatra rather than simply attending a political programme.
Khan said the Yatra had a significant impact on the Karnataka Congress by bringing the cadre together, renewing workers’ confidence and rebuilding the connection between the party and the people. He said this groundwork contributed to the Congress’s performance in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections.
The Yatra passed through 20 Assembly constituencies during its 22 days in Karnataka. In the 2023 elections, the Congress won 15 of these 20 seats, compared with 5 in 2018. The BJP’s tally fell from 9 seats in 2018 to 2 in 2023, while the JD(S) won 3 seats in 2023.
Khan said the electoral figures represent only part of the Yatra’s impact. Based on his firsthand experience, he noted that the Yatra changed the mood among Congress workers and strengthened the party’s organisation on the ground.

Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar commemorated four years of Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, highlighting its message of unity and its impact on Karnataka.
