The International Women’s Day 2026 celebration was held at the Central Office of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) in Bengaluru, where Ramalinga Reddy, the Transport and Muzrai Minister of Karnataka, participated in the programme and flagged off 45 Karnataka Sarige buses and 70 Pallakki sleeper buses.

During the event, the minister highlighted that International Women’s Day is observed worldwide on March 8 to recognise the contributions of women in various fields and to promote their rights, equality, and dignity. He stated that women today are making significant achievements in sectors such as education, science, social service, politics, family life, and the economy, and emphasized that women’s empowerment is essential for the progress of society.

The minister also appreciated the work of Dr. Shubha V., a Padma Shri awardee who worked for decades at the CSIR–National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) in Bengaluru. She was recognised for developing the indigenous runway visibility measurement system “Drishti,” which helps ensure safe aircraft landings during foggy conditions.

According to the corporation, the four state road transport corporations together have around 1.04 lakh employees, including 8,956 women staff members. These include 3,167 conductors, 2,254 technical staff, and 3,535 administrative staff.

The minister also highlighted the success of the Shakti Scheme, under which women are allowed to travel free on government buses. As of March 12, 2026, approximately 688.83 crore women passengers have availed themselves of this facility.

During the programme, 46 women employees from 17 divisions who demonstrated outstanding performance were honoured. These included 19 technical staff, 15 conductors, and 12 transport constables.

As part of the event, the minister flagged off 70 non-AC sleeper Pallakki buses and 45 Karnataka Sarige buses. The new Pallakki buses will operate on routes connecting several destinations including Udupi, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Dharmasthala, Sringeri, Horanadu, Agumbe, Chikkamagaluru, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Hampi, Raichur, Jamkhandi, Puttur, Kaniyur, Kukke Subramanya, Kasaragod, Mantralaya, Tiruchirappalli, Kozhikode, Munnar, Puducherry, Thanjavur, Kottayam, Hyderabad, Chennai, Panaji, Madurai, Kumbakonam, and Ernakulam.

The corporation also announced that 805 new Karnataka Sarige and urban/rural transport buses will be added to its fleet between April and June 2026.

Several women-friendly initiatives introduced by KSRTC were highlighted during the programme. These include priority route assignments for women conductors, the appointment of 77 women employees on compassionate grounds in the past two and a half years, and the establishment of internal complaints committees under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

Women employees are also provided with one day of menstrual leave every month, 180 days of maternity leave, and child-care leave of up to six months during their service period until the youngest child turns 18 years old. A monthly childcare allowance of ₹1,250 is provided until a child reaches the age of three, benefiting 160 women employees. In addition, women employees caring for differently-abled or mentally challenged children are eligible for 730 days of paid child-care leave.

KSRTC has also arranged separate rest rooms for women employees at various depots. Under the Vidyachetana Scheme, scholarships worth ₹88.54 lakh have been awarded to 1,747 girl students, who are children of employees, between 2022-23 and 2025-26.

Under the KSRTC Arogya Scheme, 92,945 women employees and their dependents have received cashless medical treatment, with medical expenses amounting to approximately ₹29.87 crore.
