Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has firmly ruled out any alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that it will not compromise on ideology despite what it describes as mounting pressure from the saffron party.
TVK leaders said Vijay has consistently maintained that his party will not align with the BJP due to ideological differences. He has also categorically ruled out an alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
TVK General Secretary (Policy and Propaganda) Arun Raj alleged that pressure was exerted in multiple ways, including a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry and delays related to Vijay’s film Jananayagan. Vijay had earlier appeared before the CBI in Delhi on January 21 in connection with the Karur stampede case, which claimed 41 lives.
Referring to Vijay’s speech at a party event in Mahabalipuram, Arun Raj said the actor-politician had ruled out any alliance with what he termed “communal forces.” He also targeted the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), claiming its alliance with Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) reflects the growing public support for TVK.
With Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approaching, TVK is projecting itself as an independent political force, asserting that it will not enter alliances driven by pressure, but will instead follow its own ideological path.

The Supreme Court has strongly criticised the culture of giving “freebies” ahead of elections and said it is time such policies are reviewed.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant said that the burden of these citizens schemes ultimately falls on taxpayers. The court questioned, “The State says it will pay. But who will actually pay? It is the taxpayers’ money.” The observations came during the hearing of a petition filed by the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited.
The company had proposed giving free electricity to all consumers, regardless of their ability to pay. The Chief Justice Surya kanth said helping poor and needy people is understandable. He said the government must support children who cannot afford education and students who cannot pay for medical studies.
However, he made it clear that people who have the financial capacity should not be given freebies. The bench, which also included Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, warned that indiscriminate distribution of benefits is affecting the country’s development. The case also involves a challenge to Rule 23 of the Electricity Amendment Rules, 2024.
The rule requires strict financial discipline and states that any gap between the cost of supplying electricity and the tariff collected should not exceed 3 percent and must be cleared within a fixed time. The Supreme Court’s remarks have once again sparked debate over free schemes and their impact on the economy.

The Maharashtra government has officially cancelled the 5 percent reservation for Muslims in education and government and semi-government jobs through a new Government Resolution (GR).
The quota was introduced in July 2014 by the then Congress-NCP government for 50 specified Muslim communities under the Special Backward Category-A (SBC-A). Along with a 16 percent Marathas quota, it had increased total reservation in the state from 52 percent to 68 percent. However, the move was challenged in the Bombay High Court for crossing the Supreme Court’s 50 percent cap on reservations. The ordinance later lapsed in December 2014 and was never made into law.
With the new Government Resolution, the state has cancelled all earlier decisions related to the Muslim quota, stopped issuing caste and non-creamy layer certificates under Special backward category - A, and Restricted admissions and recruitments under this category.
Officials called this move as procedural, but the Opposition accused the BJP-led government of being anti-minority. Congress leader Naseem Khan termed the decision “extremely wrong” and claimed minority welfare schemes were also being reduced.
However, the decision has Reopened a political debate in Maharashtra, with the Opposition viewing the cancellation as a setback to minority representation and social justice, even as the government maintains that the move merely formalises a quota that had no legal standing.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation, or KSRTC, has revised its luggage fees for passengers across the state.
According to the new update, the corporation has increased the luggage charges by 15 percent. The revised rates will come into effect from February 16.
As per the existing rule, passengers can carry luggage up to 30 kilograms free of cost. However, if the weight exceeds 30 kg, extra charges will apply. These charges are calculated based on distance, which is divided into “stages.” One stage is equal to 6 kilometres.
Under the new fare structure, passengers will now have to pay Rs 6 for stages 1 to 5, which was earlier Rs 5. For stages 6 to 12, the charge has been increased to Rs 12 from Rs 10. For longer distances, such as stages 156 to 160, the luggage fee has gone up to Rs 145 from Rs 123.
KSRTC officials said the hike is part of a revision in operational costs. The decision is expected to impact passengers who travel with heavy luggage on long-distance routes.
