Importance of Folic Acid during Pregnancy🤰🩺👇
Folic acid is very important during pregnancy because it plays a key role in the development of the baby’s brain and spinal cord, especially in the first few weeks — often before a woman even knows she’s pregnant.
📌1. Prevents Neural Tube Defects (NTDs)
• The neural tube is the early structure that forms the baby’s brain and spinal cord.
• Folic acid helps this tube close properly in the first 28 days after conception.
• Deficiency can cause serious birth defects such as:
• Spina bifida – incomplete closure of the spinal cord
• Anencephaly – parts of the brain and skull don’t form correctly
🩸 2. Supports Rapid Cell Growth
• During pregnancy, both the mother and baby have rapidly dividing cells.
• Folic acid helps make DNA and new cells, supporting:
• Formation of the placenta
• Growth of fetal tissues
• Increased maternal blood volume
📌3. Prevents Maternal Anemia
• Folic acid helps produce red blood cells, reducing the risk of megaloblastic anemia, which can cause:
• Fatigue
• Weakness
• Poor oxygen delivery to the baby
🧠 4. May Reduce Risk of Other Birth Defects
• Adequate folic acid levels are also linked to lower risks of:
• Cleft lip and palate
• Congenital heart defects
• Low birth weight
🛑 Recommended Amounts
•Before conception (at least 1 month prior)-
400 µg (0.4 mg)
•During pregnancy -600 µg (0.6 mg)
•High-risk women (previous NTD pregnancy, diabetes, anticonvulsant use)-
4,000 µg (4 mg) under doctor supervision
