9 YEARS LIVING WITH A CATHETER
- A real-life story
For nine years, Sanny Del Monte, a 48-year-old man from Barangay Caamlongan, Calbiga, Samar, has been living with a catheter. An accident changed his life forever, leaving him unable to work as he once did and forcing him to face a daily struggle for survival.
I met Kuya Sanny during my journey to Calidongan Lake, an adventure that will be featured in an upcoming episode on this channel. At first, he seemed like an ordinary man who knew the trails well. But as we walked, he shared a story that revealed the painful reality behind his quiet life.
Nine years ago, he tried to ride his own carabao. The animal was not used to being ridden and threw him off three times. During the last fall, his groin struck a hard bone on the carabao’s back, seriously injuring his urinary tract and causing severe bleeding.
He was far from the village, alone and in pain. Out of embarrassment, he tied up the carabao and walked home, trying to hide what had happened. He did not seek medical attention immediately. It was only after a week, when he could no longer urinate, that he finally went to the hospital.
He underwent surgery and was fitted with a catheter. He believed it would only be temporary, as he was supposed to undergo another operation to restore his normal urination. However, the pandemic disrupted those plans, and the follow-up surgery never took place. He eventually sold his carabao, but the money that could have helped pay for the operation was spent.
Since then, his life has never been the same.
Before the accident, Kuya Sanny could perform heavy labor to support his family. After the surgery, he could no longer do the same work. His marriage eventually ended, and his children moved away to earn a living of their own. Although they sometimes help him, their support is not always enough.
Today, he lives alone in a small hut covered with tarpaulin, its makeshift walls and roof slowly deteriorating. When work is available, he earns what he can by doing lighter tasks, such as clearing weeds from fields. But when there is no work, even finding enough food becomes a challenge. He often depends on the kindness of others to get through the day.
At 48, he still wants to work. He still wants to earn his own money and live with dignity. But despite his willingness and determination, his physical condition prevents him from doing the heavy work he once relied on.
He is like a bird whose wings have been taken away. The desire to fly remains, but the freedom to spread his wings has been taken from him.
Listening to his story made me realize how little we sometimes know about the people we meet. I went to Calidongan Lake expecting an adventure and the chance to discover another beautiful place in Samar. Instead, I encountered a story of hardship, loss, and a man who continues to fight silently for a better life.
Kuya Sanny is not asking for wealth or a life of luxury. He simply hopes to receive proper medical treatment, regain his ability to work, and live without constantly depending on others. He wants the chance to provide for himself again and recover the independence he lost nine years ago.
I cannot say what the future holds for him. His condition requires proper medical evaluation to determine what treatment may still be possible. But I hope that his story reaches people who may be able to help him find the medical care he needs.
Because sometimes, the most meaningful discoveries on an adventure are not the places we reach, but the people whose stories we learn along the way.
And behind every person we meet, there may be a struggle we know nothing about.

I used to see this place only in books.
Back when I was in elementary school, most of the pictures were almost black and white. But when I saw it in an encyclopedia with colored photos, I could already see how beautiful this place was.
Back then, I only knew it through pictures and stories. But now, I’m finally here in person, and it’s even more beautiful.
This place is popularly known as Pagsanjan Falls. The name came from the traditional route to the falls, which starts in the town of Pagsanjan, where visitors travel upriver by boat through the famous “Shooting the Rapids” adventure.
But here’s the interesting part: the falls itself is actually located within the municipality of Cavinti, Laguna.
That’s why the local government of Cavinti has promoted the name Cavinti Falls and even passed a resolution requesting that it be recognized as the official name. However, Pagsanjan Falls remains the widely recognized name and is still used by national tourism sources.
Today, you can reach the falls from the Cavinti side through the trail and steep metal stairs. It’s a challenging descent, but it gives you a completely different kind of adventure.
So whether you call it Pagsanjan Falls, Cavinti Falls, or Magdapio Falls, we’re talking about the same famous waterfall, one that I used to see only in the pages of a book, and now, I’m finally standing right here in front of it.
