Welcome to Plot Luck — where storytelling takes center stage, and everyone brings something to the table.

I’m Brian — a writer, story consultant, and studio insider with a background in development, production, and script doctoring. I’ve worked with over 600 writers across film, TV, and games, helping more than 30 get signed professionally.

Here, we cross mediums and genres to explore what makes stories work — from blockbuster movies and prestige TV to groundbreaking games and unforgettable anime. We break down why great stories land, how to fix the ones that don’t, and how you can use those same tools in your own creative life.

🎬 Whether you’re crafting your own story or just love pulling them apart, Plot Luck is your seat at the storytelling table. Subscribe to join the feast, stir the plot, and bring something to the story.

🔥 PLOT HEADS!!! Chapter Finale + What's Ahead! (more below)

What a way to end When Characters Collide. ❤️

The finale is officially out, and I’ll be hanging around in the comments today because I genuinely cannot wait to hear what you think about The Character Mirror and this whole idea of treating a character’s relationship with themselves like any other dynamic in the story. 👀

And now...

🗣️ DIALOGUE THAT DELIVERS begins NEXT WEEK!!!

We’re kicking off the new chapter with a brand-new video on Saturday, followed by a special PLOT LUCK LIVE on Sunday at 12pm PT / 3pm ET! 🎉

For the Live, we’ll break down real scenes and script pages, talk through what makes the dialogue work, and open things up for your story questions too.

🔔 The Live is already scheduled, so click “Notify me” on the event page (below) and YouTube will remind you when we’re about to go live!

🔥 PLOT HEADS!!! WE ARE BACK!!! ❤️

And we’ve got the CHAPTER FINALE coming this SUNDAY at 9am PT / 12pm ET! 🚨

We’ve spent all of When Characters Collide exploring relationships between characters. And we’ll definitely keep coming back to character dynamics and more of the topics YOU all have been asking for.

🌊 But after a little time away and some self-reflection by the beach… I realized there was one relationship we somehow never explored.

👉 A character’s relationship with THEMSELVES.

What happens if we treat that relationship like any other dynamic in a story?

Because maybe one of the most important relationships in your entire story…

is the one nobody else can see. 👀

🗣️ AND THEN… DIALOGUE THAT DELIVERS begins next week!!!

We’ll be kicking off the new chapter with a BRAND-NEW VIDEO and a special PLOT LUCK LIVE next weekend! 🎉 More details coming soon! ❤️

As always, thank you for building this channel and community with me.

Don’t forget to stir the plot!

🔥 PLOT HEADS! No video this week + chapter finale next week (more below)

I’m spending some time with family this week, including my twin sister, niece, and nephew from the family video, and taking a little time to recharge before we gear up for what’s ahead. ❤️

👉 NEXT WEEK: We’ll be back with the FINALE of When Characters Collide (details coming soon!) before we jump into our next chapter: Dialogue That Delivers!

💬 I can’t wait to share what we have in store as we dig into dialogue on the page and on the screen, experiment with how lines actually play out loud, and explore all the little choices that make a conversation come alive.

💡 AND YOUR VIDEO IDEAS... I have genuinely been in awe of all the suggestions you left on my last post. There are SO many great ones! I’m going to go through them, get everything organized, and keep a running list as we move forward.

And you may start seeing some of them sooner than you think. 👀 Going forward, Plot Luck is going to mix in more videos outside of whatever chapter we happen to be in, giving us more freedom to jump into great ideas when they come up.

So if you haven’t dropped an idea on that post yet, keep them coming! I really appreciate you all. ❤️

Enjoy your weekend, Plot Heads!

Don't forget to stir the plot,

Plot Luck

Plot Heads, I want to hear from you!!! 👀

Dialogue That Delivers is our next chapter on Plot Luck, but I also want to start mixing in more videos that don’t necessarily have to fit whatever chapter we happen to be in.

So I really want to hear from you:

👉 What would you genuinely love to see me cover on the channel?

It could be:

• A writing topic or problem you’ve been struggling with
• Something from a previous chapter, like worldbuilding or character
• Pitching, the business, or the industry
• A specific movie, show, game, character, or IP you want me to dig into
• A storytelling question you’ve always had
• Or something I haven’t even thought of!

Let me know what you’d love to see below!

🙏 Also, thank you so much for all the support on the mentorship video! I’ve loved reading through your comments and hearing what you all took away from it.

Don't forget to stir the plot!

🔥 PLOT HEADS!!! New video drops SUNDAY at 9am PT / 12pm ET! 🚨

We’re winding down When Characters Collide, and there was one relationship I absolutely could not leave out.

👉 THE MENTOR.

Iroh. Obi-Wan. Phil (Hercules). Jiraiya. Haymitch. All Might. We’ve seen this trope used over and over and over again!

And that raises a question I’ve been thinking about a lot:

👀 How do you write a mentor character that doesn’t feel like the same old mentor?

Because I think that gets at something bigger about tropes in general. We’re working with things the audience already recognizes, so the challenge is making them feel specific to your story.

And that’s where a few Trope Traps might be waiting for us... 😬

I’m really excited for you all to see this one! ❤️

Don’t forget to stir the plot!

🔥 Plot Heads!!! We’ve got a big weekend ahead!

Tomorrow (Saturday) at 11am PT / 2pm ET is our 20K Plot Luck Live!

Make sure to go to the Live tab on the channel and click notify so you don't miss it!

👉 Here's the itinerary: We’ll hang out, answer your writing questions, and then build an original concept from premise to character using your ideas, live polls and Plot Luck frameworks!

This will be a fun opportunity to put what we have been learning into practice and have fun doing it!

🔴 Then on Sunday the Family Dynamics video finally drops!

As you know, this video took some extra time to bring together. Not only can family be complicated in the real world, but also in fiction.

So this video will grapple with that complexity so that you can truly write families that feel real on the page.

Plus, this way we spread things out and you get two straight days of Brian! Good luck!
😂

🙏 Thank you all for your amazing support and patience! I can not wait to see you all tomorrow.

🔥 Plot Heads!!! New video drops SATURDAY at 3pm PT / 6pm ET! 🚨

(And keep reading, because I have a special announcement below 👀)

We have talked about character chemistry, heroes and villains, romance, and friendship.

This week, we are taking on what I believe is the most difficult character dynamic to write:

👉 Family 🏠❤️

A family has to balance every individual, their relationships with one another, and the identity they all share. Add in years of history, love, pressure, and expectations, and it can become overwhelming fast.

Fortunately, I created a framework that makes family dynamics easier to write, and it works for any group in your story.

🎉 Now for the announcement... WE JUST HIT 20,000 PLOT HEADS!!!

I want to thank you each and every one of you for all your support! This has been an incredible journey so far and we are just getting started. ❤️

To celebrate, join me for a special Plot Luck live event next Saturday, August 8 at 11am PT / 2pm ET! (Mark your calendars and hit the "Notify me" button)

We’ll answer your story questions, celebrate 20K, and build an original story from scratch using your ideas and live polls!

Plot Luck

🔥 Plot Heads!!! New video drops SATURDAY at 3pm PT / 6pm ET! 🚨

Last week, we talked about writing romance! This week, we’re turning to one of the most important relationships in all of storytelling:

👉 Friendship 🫶

Because honestly, I think we have a major friendship problem!

We call two characters best friends, give them some history and inside jokes, and assume the relationship is handled. Then we suddenly expect it to carry the betrayal, the sacrifice, or the emotional heart of the story.

📊 And that matters, because UCLA’s recent Teens and Screens study found that nearly 60% of 14-to-24-year-olds want more stories where friendship is the central relationship.

So this Saturday, we’re exploring the Four Failures of Friendship, and what it actually takes to make a friendship feel alive on the page.

🙏 Also a big thank you for all the incredible support. Considering this week’s topic, I should probably say it. I consider you all great friends. ❤️

Don’t forget to stir the plot!
-Brian

P.S. Also, we are now more than 18,000 Plot Heads strong! When we reach 20K, I’ll be hosting a special Plot Luck live event to celebrate. More details to come! 🎉

🔥 Plot Heads! New Video on Writing Romance drops TODAY at 3pm PT / 6pm ET! ❤️

This video posed a really unique challenge!

There is so much advice out there about the meet-cute, the first kiss, the breakup and all the familiar plot beats.

But none of that alone explains why we actually root for two specific people to be together.

So today, we’re getting underneath all of that and looking at the character arcs and relationship dynamics that make a romance feel real, whether it’s carrying the whole story or unfolding as a subplot.

I really think we found the right way into this one, and I cannot wait for you to see it!

🙏 As always, thank you all for the incredible support and for continuing to make this such an amazing community.

I'll see you all in the comments at 3!

Don’t forget to stir the plot!

Plot Luck

🔥 Plot Heads!!! New video drops SATURDAY at 3pm PT / 6pm ET! 🚨

Last week, we talked about how stories break our hearts. This week, we’re looking at how they bring two hearts together.

That means we’re back to our normal Plot Luck schedule with a topic we’ve been circling for a while:

👉 Writing romance ❤️

Because honestly, I think we’ve been taught the wrong way to write it. We spend so much time on the meet-cute and all the familiar plot beats that we can lose the character arcs and relationship dynamics underneath them.

So I’m sharing a brand-new framework for building those relationships, whether romance is the heart of your story or a subplot.

🙏 Also, thank you so much for all the support on the heartbreak video. I’m so glad that one connected with so many of you, and I cannot wait for you to see what’s next.

Don’t forget to stir the plot!
