Another sparkling ghazal from the repertoire Jazbaat written by Sri Bhagawat Prasad Mishra - a candid expression of getting hooked on to the amazing splendor and munificence of His God Sai. Niyaaz – titular name adopted by the poet, talks about two kinds of love that stirs up one’s emotion when smitten by it. The first one is Ishq-e-Mazzazi - a rather selfish, limited and even noisy affair that seeks nothing beyond gratification of one’s ego. It contains all the elements of love such as fondness, empathy, sensuality, and so on, yet is limited by time, circumstance and space. The affection here is ephemeral and is best described as Infatuation or fascination. However the other kind of Love is Ishq-e-Hakiki – Love that is immortal and transcends all physical and sensual limits – always giving and forgiving, sharing and caring - whose dimensions are infinite. Professor Mishra, who is head over heels for SAI ascribes every event of his life - good or bad to the redeeming grace of his Beloved and epitomises such transcendental Love.
I was fortunate to get a copy of Jazbaat on 22/7/97 autographed by the author, with a mandate to set the songs to tune. For the next one decade the book remained on my shelf waiting to be rediscovered and read. While rummaging through some documents, I came across some more poems scribbled by the author that reminded me of the book that had been forgotten completely. Over the next days and months I was obsessed by the songs and the urgency to tune these priceless lyrical gems that reflect the pangs of love experienced by the poet. Some of these select songs were recorded in the mellifluous voice of Padmashri Sri Suresh Wadkar recently to be contained in a larger musical album entitled Jazbaat.
The present song is an ode to His Divine Eyes - eyes that envision the depths of compassion – eyes that are enchanting and all-knowing – eyes extolled as Lotus Eyes compared with lotus petals, eyes that confer life and the will to live in love. Swami once asked a student the power of his eye glasses and as an act benediction wore it on. The next moment He winced and said, “Hey your glasses are really high powered. You must be blind without these. Look at me, I don’t need glasses to see the world around me. I am Krantdarshi and can see beyond the seen. Just a glance from these eyes can confer bliss to the fortunate one.
