The Makheil (Yagnopavit or Mekhala) ceremony in the Kashmiri Pandit community is a deeply significant rite of passage, marking the spiritual and educational initiation of a boy into his Brahminical responsibilities.
Kashmiri Pandit Makheil Ceremony
The ceremony is traditionally performed around the age of eight, or before marriage if missed earlier .Known locally as “Mekhal” or “Mekhala,” the ritual includes the investiture of the Yagnopavit (sacred thread or janeu) worn across the body, symbolizing spiritual discipline and readiness to learn the scriptures.
