Negril residents to @thejamaicapost: "Please do your job!"
For nearly a year now, residents of Negril — one of Jamaica’s most famous resort towns — have been left without a functioning post office. The Negril Post Office, which once served thousands of locals, small business owners, pensioners, and tourists alike, has been shuttered since late 2023, with no meaningful interim solution offered by the government or the leadership of Jamaica Post. This prolonged closure has drawn the ire of the public and sparked serious questions about the competency and leadership of Postmaster General Lincoln Allen, whose silence has only deepened frustration.
The Negril community has been forced to endure 11 months without access to even the most basic postal services. That means no mail delivery, no place to pick up packages, and — most disturbingly — no access to pension cheques for the elderly who depend on them to survive. The only option given by the Postmaster General? Residents must travel to Little London, located more than 17 kilometres away, to collect their mail. This is not only an inconvenience — it is an insult to a town that contributes significantly to Jamaica’s tourism-driven economy and deserves basic infrastructure.
Despite growing public outcry and media pressure, particularly from local outlet Negril Times, the Postmaster General has not provided any concrete updates or solutions. In May 2025, a full nine months into the closure, Jamaica Post issued a press release claiming it had identified a temporary location at the Negril Marine Park Headquarters and was in talks with the National Land Agency to resume operations. At the time, they optimistically promised a reopening by July 2025.
That month has now come and gone. It is August. Still, there has been no update, no apology, no temporary measures, and most glaringly, no accountability. As the Postmaster General continues to evade public engagement, many are wondering whether his job is ceremonial at best — or whether the Office of the Prime Minister, which oversees Jamaica Post, is also complicit in this failure.
What makes the situation even more egregious is the lack of creative thinking or use of obvious alternatives. Mobile post offices in Jamaica have existed since 1936 — and as recently as 2016, one was launched to serve rural areas in St. Ann. Why wasn’t Negril considered for such a solution? Why hasn’t Jamaica Post assigned a postman to deliver mail locally? Why hasn’t a temporary counter been established at the police station, fire department, or even a government office? The total absence of interim measures points to a shocking level of bureaucratic incompetence or worse — indifference.
The failure to reopen the Negril Post Office by the promised July 2025 deadline is not just a logistical failure — it’s a leadership failure. Postmaster General Lincoln Allen has demonstrated a complete lack of urgency, transparency, and innovation in solving a problem that is affecting one of Jamaica’s most important communities. At this point, residents and stakeholders are demanding that Prime Minister Andrew Holness intervene directly. After all, the Postmaster General reports to the Office of the Prime Minister. Accountability should not be optional — especially not for a position that affects national communication and public service.
As Negril waits in limbo, pensioners continue to suffer, businesses struggle without basic postal support, and public trust erodes. The Jamaica Post’s reputation is now on the line. And unless urgent action is taken, this scandal will become a case study in how not to run a critical public service.
Jamaicans are watching. So is the rest of the world — especially tourists, investors, and observers who see a town stripped of its postal service for almost a year, with no sign of leadership in sight.
In 2020, Lucea Mayor Sheridan Samuels (PNP) & then Councillor for the Hopewell Division Devon Brown (JLP) publicly agreed that politicians should pay for political signs displayed across the parish. DO YOU AGREE THAT POLITICIANS SHOULD PAY THE SAME FEES AS REGULAR CITIZENS TO PUT UP CAMPAIGN SIGNS?
