National Wildlife

As America's largest non-profit conservation organization, the National Wildlife Federation works closely with those who span the social and political spectrum, but who are connected by a common commitment to conservation. Our ability to meet the needs of wildlife is inextricably linked to the over 6 million amazing individuals, groups, organizations and corporations we call our supporters.

Our mission is to unite all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world. Through conservation efforts, grassroots actions, education programs, and award-winning publications (including National Wildlife, Ranger Rick, Ranger Rick Jr., and Ranger Rick Cub) we connect with people across the nation to safeguard America’s wildlife and wild places.

Silent Sparks 🔆

Known by many different names, including lightning bugs and candle flies, fireflies are neither bugs nor flies but beetles. The firefly family, Lampyridae, includes more than 2,200 distinct species worldwide. The United States hosts about 170 species sprinkled unevenly across the country. 🌎

Why do fireflies flash? While creating light or bioluminescence is a common trait among sea creatures, it is rare in the terrestrial realm, with the noteworthy exceptions being fireflies and a few other insects along with some fungi, millipedes, and earthworms. 💡

⭐ How to Help Fireflies at Home ⭐

1️⃣ Go Wild: Replace lawns with native grasses or wildflower meadows and provide moist places.

2️⃣ Avoid Pesticides: Practice organic gardening techniques that do not rely on chemical products.

3️⃣ Bring Back the Night: Eliminate nonessential landscape lighting such as on trees and façades and use motion sensors and timers to shine essential lights.
