President Donald Trump said he sent Chinese President Xi Jinping a letter asking him not to provide weapons to Iran, and said Xi replied that China was not supplying Tehran, according to an interview aired on Fox Business.
Reuters reported Trump did not say when the letters were exchanged, but said the issue came amid Washington’s wider pressure campaign over the Iran conflict.
Trump also said he does not expect the Iran war or turmoil in global oil markets to affect his planned meeting with Xi next month.
In a separate Truth Social post, Trump claimed he was “permanently opening” the Strait of Hormuz and said China would be pleased, though Reuters noted it was not immediately clear what he meant because shipping in the waterway remains constrained.
The remarks come as the US blockade on maritime trade to and from Iran continues and talks on ending the war remain uncertain.

Australia has appointed Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as its next chief of army, making her the first woman to lead the Australian Army in its 125-year history.
The government said Coyle, who is currently the chief of joint capabilities, will take over the role in July, replacing Lieutenant General Simon Stuart.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “From July, we will have the first ever female chief of army in the Australian Army’s 125-year history.”
Coyle has served for nearly four decades and has held senior command roles during operations in Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Her appointment comes as Australia’s military pushes to increase the number of women in senior roles while facing scrutiny over allegations of systemic sexual harassment and discrimination within the defence force.

The United States has begun a naval blockade targeting all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports, following the collapse of high-level talks with Tehran.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the blockade will be enforced on vessels of all nations calling at Iranian ports across the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman.
However, US officials clarified that the operation will not block ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz if they are headed to or from non-Iranian ports, easing earlier fears of a full chokepoint shutdown.
The move follows the breakdown of marathon negotiations in Islamabad, with Washington seeking to increase pressure on Iran after failing to reach a deal.
Iran warned that any military enforcement near the Strait of Hormuz would be seen as a violation of the ceasefire, raising fears of further escalation in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
