This is perhaps the best Jimmy Smith documentary. This was filmed during Jimmy Smiths European tour in 1965. It was the same tour that yielded the amazing Jimmy Smith "Incredible! Jimmy Smith" live album. The album was released in 1965 in Germany only, and came out in 1967 in the USA, on the MGM sublabel Metro and a then reduced price.
Creed Taylor flew to Hamburg for the recording and show, he also travelled to the UK. The trip to Germany would establish life long contacts and it's fitting that Creed died in Germany in August 2022.
This film is included on a 5 DVD Box set of famed German documentary producer Klaus Wildenhahn. I'd like to to see this re-issued with an English commentary translation rather than subtitles.
