I’m so discouraged by a conversation happening on @dylanjosephwrites channel that it’s dampening my motivation to write. I just don’t know what to think.
Several people are saying that pirating books is a good thing if people don’t have access to them such as not being able to afford them or not having access to Libby or libraries that can get them. I think you can see why this promotion of stealing books from authors is distressing me but I’m being told that my stance means I don’t want poor people to be able to read.
I want there to be a good solution but I also don’t think I can be okay with the entitlement of people just taking books with no compensation to the author.
I do my best to make my books available as much as possible. They are only $5 and under, they are in Libby, and I have sent copies to people who message me about being located somewhere they can’t access them.
Still, I spend a lot of time and effort on these books and I’m pretty poor myself. It feels very violating to have my work taken without permission. I never even put DRM on them before but I am now based only on this comment section.
AITA? Is there a win-win solution here? I truly want to hear perspectives on this issue.
IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: If you bought my book Waiting To Break in ebook, I have just been informed that chapter 31 was missing! I just changed it in Amazon so you can redownload it to get the complete book. I am SO sorry!
Black Sails is on Netflix! I highly recommend it. It is a prequel to treasure Island, and they did an amazing job with keeping it accurate to the story and accurate to the age of piracy that they were in. I am working on a treasure Island related project right now and so I am diving into all sorts of pirate research.
Reminder, I am doing an in-person book reading, author Q&A, and signing of my new book, Waiting To Break, on October 9th at 4:00 pm. If you are anywhere near Concord, MA, I hope you'll join me! It's at the Fowler branch library in West Concord and you can register here (it's free but I want to know how many people to expect): concordlibrary.assabetinteractive.com/calendar/fow…
