M+TM return to the stage in 2025 for the “Looking Back - Living the Years” Tour.
Even inside Genesis, Mike Rutherford's forte has always been his melodic songwriting. With the successful side project Mike & the Mechanics, the artist managed to find a further way to express himself working with other composers and different teams. Since 1985, Mechanics became a brand in their own, releasing seven albums, selling more than 10 million records, launching many hit singles and touring worldwide with a two frontmen led band.
The sudden death of one of the original singers, Paul Young, needed a period of adjustment but, after one experimental album with Paul Carrack as the only vocalist, Rutherford changed the face to the band recruiting two new singers, Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar.

Mike + The Mechanics
On this day in 1988, Mike + The Mechanics released "Living Years" as their second studio album in the UK.
After the surprise success of the Mechanics' debut album, created with the help of many session musicians - "Living Years" by comparison was a more streamlined effort, with Paul Carrack, Paul Young, Adrian Lee and Peter Van Hooke becoming full-time members of the band.
"Last time I hadn't allowed enough time for Mike + The Mechanics. It became a success and then I was back working with @genesis. This time I'm leaving proper time for Mike + The Mechanics before I even think about Genesis again." - Mike, 1988
The album featured the Ivor Novello-winning, global smash hit "The Living Years", and charted at #2 in the UK and #13 in the US.

“This album didn’t feel like a solo album, because I’ve developed and presented the album differently. Hence the group name, Mike + The Mechanics. It feels very much like a group. It’s good working with different people anyway, I'm much more creative and inspired when there are other people around me and I'm bouncing ideas off. Also, it’s a lot more fun working with others than on your own."
- Mike Rutherford for the "Mike + The Mechanics" (1985) press kit.

“It was really about time travel. The story is about the idea that this father of the family is ahead in time, so he can look back and see what’s going to happen in England, and it’s not good.
He’s trying to get a message back to his family to warn them that the impending disaster is coming. Hence the line, ‘Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?’”. - Mike Rutherford
