$0: The amount of grant money I have applied for to make my documentary series about spies.

$0: The amount of government money of any kind that I have applied for to make my documentary series about spies.

Why? Because I believe it can succeed on its own, and that it will be more than commercially viable.

Why?

Because literally every single person I have told about it has enthusiastically and unreservedly said they would LOVE to see it. People who have no reason to lie to me about that.

Because it's exactly the kind of series I'd LOVE to see.

And because there are already several similar shows in the U.S. that are hugely popular—yet none of them scratch the surface of what I'm doing with this, and no one has ever tried to tell the story of Canadian intelligence like this before. Heck, no one has ever made a show like this in Canada before.

But don't take my word for it.

In less than a year, more than 3200 people have subscribed to the YouTube channel promoting the series, and the videos there already have over 140,000 views and nearly 10,000 watch hours (that's almost a full week, 24 hours a day, of watch time)!

Now, imagine more than just the interview videos on the YouTube channel. Imagine a premium, pulse-pounding, intriguing spy thriller that just happens to be a journalistically rigorous, probing, insightful, compelling, thought-provoking documentary series. A show with all the production values of a real spy thriller, but with the twist that it's all real, told first-hand by the people who were actually there. A show that really gets into the hearts and minds of the people who fight for Canada in the shadows. People who deal with situations most of us can only imagine. A show that, for the first time, really gets to the heart of what it means to be a spy.

So, where do I go from here? Here's one more number: $3 to $4 million.

That's the budget I need to make all of this happen, in an ideal scenario. Sure it could be done for less—and people have been telling me that I'll have to settle for a lot less if I want to get this made, at least in Canada. But these stories, and this show, will be worth way more than that!

And besides, people also said I would never find former CSIS officers willing to speak with me, let alone go on camera. And I have a meeting with another one tomorrow.

So there you go.
