If you are a fan of jazz piano, you might want to check out this video of a rehearsal of **"April in Paris"** by **Barry Harris**, one of the living legends of bebop. Harris is not only a master pianist and composer, but also a renowned educator who has taught generations of musicians his unique approach to jazz harmony and improvisation. In this video, he demonstrates some of his concepts and techniques, such as the **sixth diminished scale**, the **54321 phrase**, and the **diminished seventh chord**. He also shows how to apply them to the chord changes of "April in Paris", a classic tune by **Vernon Duke** and **Yip Harburg**¹. You can hear how Harris creates beautiful melodies and harmonies with his elegant and swinging style, influenced by his idols **Charlie Parker**, **Bud Powell**, and **Thelonious Monk**⁴⁵. This video is a great example of how Harris teaches by playing and singing, rather than using formal notation or terminology. He encourages his students to listen, imitate, and explore the possibilities of jazz language. If you want to learn more about Harris and his method, you can visit his website³ or attend one of his weekly workshops in New York City², where he shares his wisdom and passion with anyone.
