Something I wanted to add in the most recent video but forgot to mention:

I’ve never used AI to produce a script (I don’t use scripts at all, as is probably very obvious from the profusion of verbal stumblings in my videos). And I have never used AI to generate a video! But about 6 months ago, I tried to generate a thumbnail for a video. Fortunately, I came to my senses and didn’t use the generated thumbnail! Luckily my partner is highly skilled when it comes to visual design and she helps me with those kinds of things. But even editing software comes loaded with AI tools nowadays and not all of the functions are explicitly labelled as “AI” so it would be dishonest to say that I operate in a perfectly AI-free environment! Even YT seems to incorporate “AI summaries” and generated captions which we as creators don’t intentionally include in our videos. I just wanted to be transparent about that.

Hope you’re all having a lovely start to the weekend,

In my most recent video we discussed what it takes to become well-read. Another crucial factor to enhancing the quality of your reading is to read actively. Here is a video I made a while back exploring the various ways I engage with a text in order to attain maximum retention and comprehension (and enjoyment!) of a book.
Wishing you all a pleasant week in spite of the troubling instabilities of the world we inhabit!

Hi everyone, I’m very excited to share that I have just launched my channel memberships! Two factors prompted this step:

Firstly, quite a few of you lovely generous souls have asked how you can support the channel and fuel my literary work, both in video and written form.

Secondly, I wanted to create a space where I could share a range of material that is adjacent to my main fare. In this space I’ll be posting videos about my academic literary research, poetry readings from events and festivals, close-readings of individual books and writers, behind the scenes material, archived videos, my own writing, and much more.

I massively appreciate all of your support, whether you sign up for the membership or not. Please know that.

If you have any questions feel free to free to ask!

Here is the link.

I will be dropping the full list of the 100 greatest books (according to me) very soon as a fun book list challenge! In the meantime, here is the link to my essay on Jane Austen that I mentioned in the latest video. It was published a while back in Open Letters Review (my gratitude to editor ‪@saintdonoghue‬)

What is the generic and formal makeup of my list of the 100 greatest books of all time?

Glad you asked!

Counting each cheekily included omnibus collection as “one” book in our exhaustive archival research, we’ve got:

48 novels
22 books of nonfiction
12 short story collections
12 books of poetry
4 plays
And 2 books that are a roughly even mix of stories, poems, essays etc.

What sort of makeup would your list be comprised of? More nonfiction? Less fiction? More poetry?
