Drew's Model Bench

I grew up in the country, building kits on newspaper-covered kitchen tables during snowy winters. My toolkit? Testors enamel, tube glue, and brushes from the general store. My builds had brushstrokes, glue gobs, and fingerprints—but I loved them. I even hung them from my ceiling... until they met their fate during July 4th celebrations.

Fast forward to today: I’m learning modern techniques like proper fitting, filling, priming, varnishing, and weathering. I’ve added dental stone, epoxy, scribing tools, and decal solutions to my arsenal. Photo-etched parts are next on my list. My dream kits? The 1:32 Tamiya F4U-1D Corsair and the 1:32 HK B-17E/F—but I’m building up my skills before I tackle those beasts.

If you’ve made it this far, drop me a note and introduce yourself. I’d love to hear your story and learn from your journey. Let’s build something awesome—together.

First coat of primer down and the stand has been roughed in. Meng didn't build this to be displayed in flight, but that's never stopped me from making it so 😁.

Making progress on the cockpit, and I'm really excited about how it will be displayed while simultaneously having a flying bird...stay tuned!

The Meng EA-18G Growler just hit the bench. First Meng kit for me — everyone says you need $140+ in aftermarket to make this thing pop. Building it stock to find out if that's actually true. Sprues washed, first cuts going in this week. 🛠️. What's on your bench?

Scale mud is forgiving; scale concrete is ruthless.

On my very first attempt at a scratch-built diorama base, I completely botched the order of operations and accidentally got primer directly onto the finished turf. The rescue mission was pure punishment—involving wood filler, a stack of heavy books to flatten warping veneer, and a tedious cycle of precision masking and repainting.

Pulling the tape on the final border was the ultimate relief.

The final edit for the Dow City Iowa American Legion charity build is heading to the rendering queue for voiceover and final publishing within the next week.

She found her home. I'm going to switch to another kit for now, but in the future I'll finish the base and drop a video on that process.

Almost done. I should wrap her up in the next few days then on to the video edit. Had to completely rebuild my filming setup and my office, so I apologize for the delay.

I've had to do some construction on my office / bench and I'm taking the opportunity to do a little Spring cleaning. I'm wondering how many old Spru's and old model parts others keep? I culled mine down to a 1/48 scale model box today.

This 1980s tooling is winning the battle today, so the build video needs one more week of polish. Workbench tour dropping Friday to show you the tools I'm using to save this kit!"

I tried as hard as I could, but I just won't be able to get the second half of the Revell P40B released this weekend. It will be released 1/24/26. I hope you will enjoy a previously recorded video of me painting my first ever Warhammer figure that a friend gave me. The poll for my next build has the Me262 slightly winning, so be sure to vote if you haven't already. youtube.com/post/UgkxISdDjOKqZmdBS89YYJGAY0ZLc2NXK…

I was hit pretty hard with a respiratory bug and have been down over 3 weeks. I'm behind on my current build, and may not make my self imposed final release deadline of 1/17/26. If I don't make it, would you like to see my first attempt painting a Warhammer figure a friend gave me (hint it's already recorded and mixed)?
