Stag Beetles are Cool

Hello, I am a beginner beetle breeder. I love stag beetles, and they will be what I primarily keep. I hope to post the progress of my journey raising beetles here on this channel, guides on raising and caring for beetles as well as silly moments with my beetles.

You can't really tell from the photo, but my female metallic stag beetle has emerged, so I'll need to dig her up sometime soon and she how she is.

Stag Beetles are Cool

My Dorcus schenklingi male has had his color fully come in, and he's looking niiice; so I had to take a photo and show my cat too. I like how he is very defensive, and always puts his mandibles on display when I'm giving him a quick check. I hope his dormancy goes swiftly.

Cola is around 6 months old now. His father lived to 7 months, so I'm getting a little worried that Cola may not live much longer. Though I sure hope he does. He's been a good boy though. He doesn't have a ton of kids, around 5 total. Breeding didn't go so well this generation for some reason, but I am giving it one more try to see if I get anymore, but as long as I get a pair, I should hopefully be able to continue Billy's lineage

Sorry for not posting much recently. I've just so busy with going to school recently, and working, and there has just been a lot of life stuff going on too. It hasn't peft me with a lot of time and energy to edit videos. But thank you for your continued support, and for watching my videos. I enjoy making videos, so I'm going to keep posting whenever I can.

Stag Beetles are Cool

Some people have been asking for a Pochi update, so here it is! First pic is of Pochi. His color has darkened, but it's only been about a month, so I'm expecting him to take more time before he becomes active. His dad Mochi took 3 months. But so far so good.
2nd pic is my schenklingi male, maybe I'll I should start thinking of name suggestions, maybe Zipper? Zippie and Zipper? Maybe a little too similar. Someone suggested Snickers, or mayber Kinger lol. Let me know.
Last one is my Xylotrupes philippinensis peregrinus larva. I dug up her bin, but only found one healthy egg, which has already hatched. I found several decomposing eggs, or eggs being overtaken by fungus. I'm not sure why that was happening, but I'm trying a different flake, and sterilizing it more, so I hope I will have more success this next round.
I think Walnut and Chestnut are nearing the end of their life already. I think, they are at least 2 months old, I think they only live to 3-4 months. So, maybe I'll try filming one more video with Chestnut if that is the case.

It's been several days and I don't think Twix is making a comback, so Zip is her new name! I may also call her Zippie or Zippy, or any other variation I may think of. Thank you for voting in the poles everyone!

Looks like Zip/Zippie is staying in the lead. Shall I go ahead and call it? Did you vote for Twix or Zippie, and why?

I also want to take this time to thank everyone for voting in the polls. It's always very helpful for making decisions, getting info on what the community likes, and is just fun. And thank you for watching my videos, and subscribing. I hope my content will keep being enjoyable to everyone.

Stag Beetles are Cool

I'm thinking of these 2 names for my female Dorcus schenklingi. Can you help me decide?
The original suggestion was Snickers for the female and Twix for the male, but I thought it was actually more fitting the other way around since she has a split elytra, like splitting a Twix.
Zip/Zippie is also really good, since her elytra really looks like a broken zipper on a black jacket lol.

Stag Beetles are Cool

I have finally posted another video after a week!
https://youtu.be/X1qcpf36scI Please check it out! I would really appreciate it. 2nd photo is how he is doing in his little container. He looks cute.
In other good news. 2 of Mochi & Dango's kids have made a pupa chamber. One of them looks to be a good size male. I'm looking forward to seeing them.
My first PBC larvae of the 2nd generation finally showed up on the side of the container after a month or two of not being able to see them. So I'm relieved to know that they are alright. Thank you for following my beetle keeping journey.

The last, and currently only surviving male Dorcus schenklingi, is finally here, and he looks amazing. He's also huge. Sitting at around 80mm. But not only is he huge, he also has a really features. The head has a really nice rugged look, the body looks bulky, and the mandibles have good proportions. Though they do look a bit dented up. It's something that I've seen with other specimens, I'm not sure if it's just random defects, or genetics. I hope this one will have a successful dormancy. I have a feeling he won't become active until next year though. I think this species will wait out the winter if they emerge late in the year.

1 of 3 Metallic stag larvae have pupated. This one is a female. I heard they are super quick. And indeed they are. I just hope one male emerges too and becomes active while she is still healthy. I'll need to keep her colder and hopefully slow down her aging as much as I can. The other two are males for sure. I'm looking forward to seeing them emerge.
