49ers are looking for short-term reliability in a backup kicker. It’s impossible to find a star on the street in November. So you sign the bandaid solution who still gives you a good percentage on the bread-and-butter kicks and move on

Chase McLaughlin (right) drilled a kick to beat Seattle.
Joey Slye (left) connected to beat Arizona.

The entire NFC West except for the 49ers lost this week.

The NFL's undisputed game of Week 6: 49ers at Buccaneers. Both share the best record in the NFC. Both have beaten the Seahawks shorthanded on the road. Now, they will square off in Tampa Bay.

September is ending in a couple hours. What a dramatic month it was.

On the first day of it, Jauan Jennings returned to practice. Then the 49ers got off to a good 3-1 start thanks to heroics from both of their QBs, defensive closes that reversed the previous season’s trend and some resilience through a tragic injury to Nick Bosa.

The team is still far from its final version, battered after a tough end to this first month, but four chapters of the novel are written — and they were compelling, which is all we can ask of sports.
