Alight, let's talk sound design, (which for me takes a lot of imagination, focus, and patience 😵💫 - [can't even have a sitcom on in the background, smh 😅...])
On this feature-length film on Muhammad Ali, I set aside *at least* 3 months to do sound.
The screenshot of the editing timeline in the attached image features the sound (currently in progress) from the 2 MINUTE "Official Trailer" I'm putting out next month (in July), so you can only imagine what sound work on my 2 HOUR film looks like 😳🥴☺️...
When sound editing, I don't just surface "layer" the sounds; but, in the true spirit of sound design, I layer contextually and symbolically whenever I see an opportunity.
For instance, in the shot where the young boxers are lined up posing for a picture, a few of them rock back and forth, shuffling their feet. There, I add a layer of horse footsteps used in previous horse shots under their footsteps, *very* subtly, to connect the two ideas. (Historically, there's not only a common connection made between athletes and "sport animals," but Muhammad Ali was first managed by Kentucky men who owned horses and gave themselves the title: "Owner of Cassius Clay.")
So, basically, I try to create a lot of "richness" and depth in the film, which hopefully gives the audience the opportunity to enjoy it on multiple levels 🤓, even if they don't know why 🤪... #HeThatHasAnEarLetHimHear
