Some results make you happy.
Some make you genuinely proud.
And some make you stop and look back at how far you have come.

Today is one of those days.!

A huge congratulations to all my students who have successfully cleared the OCANZ COE Optometry Examination.

As their Ophthalmology Mentor, watching these young optometrists achieve this milestone is incredibly special.

But for me, this result represents something much bigger.

Three years ago, this mentorship program looked very different.

What started as an attempt to help optometrists understand the ophthalmology component of the OCANZ examination has gradually evolved—year after year—through teaching, feedback, mistakes, discussions, difficult clinical cases, countless questions and, most importantly, learning from every batch of students.

The course has transformed significantly over these three years.

And seeing where it stands today gives me an immense sense of satisfaction—and, honestly, a little bit of pride in what we have built together.

Because ultimately, a mentor's success isn't measured by how much they teach.

It is measured by what their students go on to achieve.

👁️ LASIK, PRK or SMILE — Which one is right for you?

If you’re considering getting rid of your glasses, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is:

“Which laser procedure is the best?”

The honest answer is: there is no single best procedure for everyone.

LASIK
Creates a thin corneal flap and reshapes the cornea with a laser.
➡️ Usually offers quick visual recovery and minimal discomfort.

PRK
Does not create a corneal flap. The surface layer is removed before the cornea is reshaped.
➡️ Can be considered in selected patients, including some with thinner corneas, but recovery is slower.

SMILE
Uses a small incision to remove a tiny piece of corneal tissue (lenticule).
➡️ Minimally invasive, with a small incision and generally a relatively comfortable recovery.

But here’s the important part:

Your eye should decide the procedure—not what is trending on social media.

Your corneal thickness, shape, prescription, tear film, lifestyle, occupation and several other factors need to be evaluated before deciding.

So instead of asking:

❌ “Which procedure is the best?”

Ask:

✅ “Which procedure is safest and most suitable for MY eyes?”

That’s where a detailed pre-operative eye evaluation becomes important.

👓 Glasses may be optional. A proper evaluation isn't.

If you're considering laser vision correction, what would you want to know first — LASIK, PRK or SMILE?
