We wrapped up a tough week here in my hometown and spent the weekend revisiting old favorite places. It was lovely hiking the trails we will always know by heart. April wildflowers are popping up everywhere and they are so beautiful I just had to share them with you. It's been awhile since I was here in springtime, and it was so much fun rediscovering all the lovely blooms! Good medicine for the soul for sure.
Please swipe through and enjoy!

I'm wrapping up a very busy and emotional week in Ohio. I've cleaned out my mom's house and closed the door for the last time. Packing a lifetime of memories reminds me how brief our lives are. We spend so many of our precious moments rushing, anxious, and distracted. The last few days have surely been that for me.
This morning, on a much needed walk and with the to-do list finally finished, beautiful clusters of Dames Rocket greeted me along the edges of the trail and clouds of flowering Black Locusts made a lovely canopy overhead. These blooms appear in late April here in Southwestern Ohio for just a short time, which seems a fitting reminder to slow down and notice the simple beauty that surrounds us every day.
Honorable mention: the lovely green trees, freshly leaned out and the little creek, which the mallard ducks seemed to appreciate as well.

One of the many benefits of gardening is the opportunity to grow delicious, nutritious food. I'm not talking about the basic vegetables available on produce shelves. The varieties available for gardeners to grow is endless. The flavors, colors, and textures are limitless - in fact, we'll never have enough gardening seasons in our lifetimes to try all the amazing varieties we'd like to. And then there is the cultural and historical importance of those varieties that is just so interesting.
This morning, I pulled the last of the spring lettuce and harvested the first of summer's peppers. Planning a meal around what's ready to harvest always lights me up. Cheers to beautiful food grown under our big desert skies.
What's ready in your garden?

Pomegranate season is coming in hot and I'm here for it. These 6 pomegranate trees add so much beauty to my home orchard. By fall, I'll be swimming in fruits and I can't wait to be overwhelmed by that sweet harvest. Pomegranate trees aren't phased by heat or drought, the gophers pay them no mind, and the only real pests are the weird leaf footed bugs and the occasional ill-tempered rock squirrel. If you want a sure bet tree to grow in the desert, pomegranates are the best.

Happy Food Friday!
This simple skillet meal starts in my garden, right outside my kitchen door. I have been harvesting beets for a few weeks now. I love figuring out ways to use the whole plant if possible. The beet roots get roasted for later, while the nutrient-dense greens shine now—using the whole plant so nothing goes to waste.
I’ve also just begun pulling a few onions, choosing the ones that have started to bolt during the inconsistent temperatures of spring here in the desert. Those onions may not be good to store long-term, but once again, the whole plant can be used now. While this year’s garlic is finishing up outside, I’ve still got a several pounds of garlic bulbs stored inside from last spring’s harvest.
Onions, garlic and greens are so yummy cooked with hearty chickpeas and a touch of heat from Calabrian chiles. It’s filling, nutritious, and budget-friendly, making it a perfect way to boost your health and stretch your grocery dollars during these times of high food prices. Fresh, seasonal, and simple to make, it’s proof that garden meals can be both satisfying and smart for your wallet.
You can use any fresh greens you have: spinach, Swiss chard, or kale. They are all equally delicious! And don’t worry if you haven’t grown any of your own. Any of these greens are readily available at farmers markets and grocery stores, and even with using purchased produce, this meal is still yummy and affordable!
Another budget friendly option is to swap smoked paprika for the Calabrian chile. Just make sure it's smoked!
