I used to think lymphatic drainage was just another internet hype… until my ankle proved me wrong.

My ankles have been swollen for almost a year now. I noticed it early last year, around the time I was almost done with my service year.

We assumed it was because I was always either standing or sitting for long hours, wearing heels to work almost every day, or maybe water retention and excess salt. When I pressed them, there was no pitting. They just felt… meaty.

For months, that was how my ankles stayed. Swollen. No pain on that spot; just occasionally, my whole leg would ache sometimes and I do the traditional massage we all know.

Last week, I decided to actually research lymphatic drainage massage. I watched a few videos and learned how to massage my legs properly.

Lymphatic drainage helps to reduce swelling, improve circulation, drain stagnant fluid, support detox, and relieve that heavy feeling in the legs or body.

That’s when I realized something shocking. All these years, we’ve been massaging our legs the wrong way. We massage downward toward the feet instead of upward toward the heart.

That day, I massaged my feet, legs, thighs, and stomach. As a newbie, I honestly thought I probably did it wrong.

A few days later, I massaged my legs again. I didn’t expect anything. I even took my mind off it, thinking one or two massages wouldn’t change anything.

Until yesterday.

I woke up and noticed the swelling in my ankles had drastically reduced. My ankles were almost flat compared to last week. I literally had to stand at different angles just to be sure I wasn’t imagining things.

Y’all… this thing works.

I’ll definitely be watching more videos and learning how to do it properly.
Ahh.

I’ll say it again. There should be no single face of the natural hair movement.
Every Black person should represent with their own hair type.

Saying 4C has to be the face because 4A is β€œprivileged” doesn’t make sense to me.
If you have 4C hair, be the representation.
If you have 4A hair, be the representation.

Our hair is already politicized and divided enough.
This new idea of choosing a β€œface” is only creating more separation.

We’re seeing more β€œmy 4C could never” comments than β€œthis is how beautiful my 4C looks today.”

Charity begins at home.
Be the representation you want to see.
Style your hair well. Take pictures. Make videos if that’s your thing.
Go on dates, outings, picnics, living life with your hair as it is.

Wearing our hair in spaces where we’re told our hair is not suitable is protesting.
It saying this is normal and I look good. ❀️
