SurfLife Surf School is a locally owned Oregon Coast surf school based at Short Sands Beach in Oswald West State Park. We specialize in beginner-friendly surf lessons, private instruction, and small group experiences focused on safety, confidence, and real progress in cold-water conditions.
Our mission is to help people safely connect with the ocean. Lessons are supportive, patient, and designed for first-time surfers and returning surfers alike.

Somewhere along the way, I realized something…
I didn’t just want to be a surf instructor.
There’s nothing wrong with being a solid instructor. A good instructor teaches fundamentals, safety, technique, and helps someone stand up for the first time.
That matters.
But a coach carries a different responsibility.
A coach understands that learning to surf isn’t just physical — it’s emotional too.
Excitement. Fear. Frustration. Self-doubt. Confidence.
A good coach learns how to recognize where someone is in the journey and adapts to each person’s individual learning style.
Some people learn by watching.
Some by feeling.
Some need encouragement.
Others need challenge.
Sometimes a student needs technique. Sometimes patience. Sometimes someone to believe in them before they believe in themselves.
A coach teaches more than surfing.
They teach confidence. Awareness. Surfer IQ. Calmness in chaos. Composure in calamity. Respect for the ocean and respect for yourself.
To me, surfing has never just been a sport.
It’s a ritual. A conversation with something bigger than us. The ocean teaches patience, humility, and presence.
Being a good coach takes discipline, emotional intelligence, and responsibility — because people trust you in vulnerable moments of growth.
And somewhere along the way, I realized…
Maybe my calling was never just helping people catch waves.
Maybe it was helping people believe they belong in the ocean 🌊🤙
