My Black History

In 2014 I released my 2nd Spoken Word CD "Poetree Huggin"

To be honest with this concussion and loss of family and friends in the past six years I think I have forgotten many of my accomplishments. I have not listened to this CD or any of the tracks for years... until this morning and I'm like wow ok Amani.

I think my life has changed immensely since 2019 but somehow in doing this My Black History Series I am being reminded that all is not lost.

Creating a CD is a lot of work from hiring graphic designers, to hitting the recording studio, to working out independent distribution...

I did that and more. This is my Black History. I started to perform Spoken Word in 1995. I have had the honour of being a feature at the Nuyorican Café in 2006. I have performed in England, Birmingham, Trinidad and Tobago and have performed in countless festivals and showcases and in Ontario, Nova Scotia and Montreal, Canada... The Famous Showcase produced by Dwayne Morgan "When Sisters Speak" 2013 was the last time I was in that show but that particular show was very special to me. I was also a part of the very first one in 2000.

I cannot remember when I joined Reverbnation and forgot I loaded a few of my poems on there... have a listen when you have time. And as always let me know about your Black History ✊🏾

My Black History ✊🏾

#FreedomTheatre #Philadelphia #Blacktheatre #CooleyHigh

In 1997 I had the honour and privilege of working with the then Artistic Director Walter Dallas (God continue to rest his soul) on the staged musical production of "Cooley High". I was Assistant Director to the production and Mo Beasley was the stage manager, who constantly challenged me. (We Cool now though)... I got to meet Glenn Turnman and Larry Hilton Jacob's from the original production 😀... To this day my experience at Freedom Theatre was one of the most life changing experiences...

Below is an excerpt from "Author of The Month" 2013 an interview and expose by Diaspora Diaologues based in Tkaronto 🩵

I am the type of person who doesn’t take no for an answer when I really want to do something or really believe in it. A few examples of this are the time I spent in Philadelphia at Freedom Theatre. I was running a cultural youth organization at the age of 27 and took a group of youth to Philadelphia, and Freedom Theatre ended up being one of our stops, but also a place that had a huge impact on me.

I decided while visiting that I wanted to go back there. I asked them if they ever had interns from Canada, and they hadn’t but I went back to Nova Scotia and worked out a way to go back there and share in their Africentric theatrical experience. I wrote my first Canada Council Grant in 1996 to do a residency at the theatre and received it.

I spent 9 months at Freedom and those 9 months changed my life considerably. I was challenged, because it was a different culture, I had to stand up for myself quite a bit (being the lady from Canada), and I actually cried a lot at night, but always went back down to the theatre smiling each day ready to face the challenges again. In the end, I made life long connections and learned that I don’t have to be afraid to try/do anything in life. I can’t say that I’m fearless but I will say that I can face my fears. I think if I’ve never faced my fears I would still be sitting in an apartment in Nova Scotia wishing I could do things.

My Black History!

#Blacktheatre #Africanculture #Blackhistorymonth

"The Imani Women's Artistic Project" is a youth theatre company I started in 1995 or 96 in Nova Scotia for young Black Women and this picture is from one of our first big plays "The Search For The African Princess" held at the Kids On The Waterfront Festival for Eastern Front Theatre.

Present Day - I found the original script from the 90s and did edits to format it as a script for theatre for young audiences so that the Playwrights Guild of Canada can have it available as part of their Play Outlet script resources page 🩵

1. The Imani Women's Artistic Project (Youth/Art Project)
Description: This project is identified as a one-woman power project initiated by Anne-Marie Woods (also known as Amani).
Target Demographic: It focuses on young women between the ages of 16-25

Content: The work often involves blending prose, poetry, spoken word, theatre and music to examine the experiences of young Black women.
