Welcome to The Fioneers. Our friends call us by our first names, Jess and Corey.
If you've been following our story, you know that we are pursuing FI (Financial Independence) and are looking to enjoy the journey along the way. We've made intentional choices to design our lives along our journey to financial independence. This means working for mission-driven nonprofit organizations, quitting toxic jobs, working part-time, launching a side business, converting that side business to full-time entrepreneurship, and also hitting the road in our newly converted Sprinter campervan.
Our goal is to share our experiences with you, and the experiences of others, so that you can design the life you love and gain financial freedom.

Two years ago, when I (Corey) stepped away from my job, we were forced to figure out health insurance on our own. Prior to leaving my job, it felt like this was a huge mystery. With no immediate plans to return to a traditional job, we knew we had to figure something else out. It took a bit of education and time, but we figured out a plan for us. And most importantly, health insurance hasn't prevented us from living life on our own terms.
My question for you: would you be interested in learning more about health insurance options for early retirement or even mini-retirement? (i.e. a future video)

We had an absolute blast hanging out with 40 other Slow FI Enthusiasts this weekend at 2024's Slow FI Retreat in New Hampshire! 🥳
This weekend, we kayaked. We hiked. We chatted about life around a campfire until 11 PM under the Milky Way. We explored new ideas. We brainstormed options. We gained more clarity about our financial freedom.
One woman even came into the weekend wanting to learn about Coast FI thinking she was a few years away and left having learned that she'd already achieved it. Little did she know, she could start making big changes right away. 😍
It sometimes feels scary to put a big dream out there. It can be challenging to take the actions needed (and work through the limiting beliefs that come up) to make your dreams a reality.
I'm incredibly honored to have had the opportunity to walk alongside 40 other awesome folks this past weekend as they articulated their dreams, worked through their fears, built a like-minded community, figured out steps to make their dreams a reality, and enjoyed time in this beautiful location.

Last week, I received this email from a reader.
Have you ever felt this way? Like you were just in a waiting game? 🙋♀️
I call this the boring middle. Most people think that this phase is inevitable. Once you set your financial goals and automate your finances to achieve them, doesn't it just become a waiting game?
While I've felt this in the past, I vehemently disagree that we are stuck in a waiting game.
I actually think that this period of our journey is the BEST, MOST EXCITING PART! You no longer need to focus as much time on finances, and instead, get to focus on LIFE!
Here is how I responded to the email...
"I'm so glad you reached out and asked this question. Congratulations on getting yourself into such a great financial position!
Regarding staying motivated, I would say that the best thing we did was put less focus on the financial milestones (after a certain point) and more focus on figuring out what our post-FI ideal life would look like AND taking steps to make as much of that as possible a reality along the journey.
Do you feel like you have a clear vision of what you want your post-FI life to look like? Could you start taking steps to make that a reality now?
As a resource, here's a podcast interview I did on Choose FI earlier this year talking about your exact question - The Cure for the Boring Middle. From my perspective, the cure for the boring middle is to take all that energy you've focused on your finances up to this point and use it to design the life you want. For people pursuing FI, we have so much more freedom to do that than we sometimes realize.
I'm also leading a free workshop this Thursday called Life by Design that will dive into this exact topic. I hope to see you there."
