I return to YouTube.... in less than 12 hours! Yes, I have a video scheduled for Monday morning (Sydney time). It's a short explanation as to why Beyond the Wall from ASOIAF and Game of Thrones is so mystical. And, the next video is about the Hagia Sophia, one of the greatest places for medieval history.
After much consideration, I've decided to take a 6 month break from YouTube, and I will be honest for the reasons why. For one, my analytics are low, and what my channel needs is a refresh, and the best way to do this is I believe, to show my face in videos (this will put to rest fears others have of me being AI). The problem is a) I need a camera and a microphone and b) All my life, I've been insecure about my looks and weight. Since 2023, I've lost 15kg, but I still have a bit to go. I know I'm not the prettiest woman out there, but the thought of mean or cruel comments about what I look like does stress me out.
As for the camera and microphone, I need to do more research, perhaps hire some out to try them first. That will take time. I completely understand if Snowy Fictions is no longer a channel you are interested in. There's no hate on my end, none at all!
This is a tough choice, and to mitigate it, I'll post my final video for a while on the weekend. But I look forward to returning - better than ever before. If you have any suggestions about what content you'd like to see, anything broadly related to history, literature, and culture (or the humanities) please share!

Just a heads up: I'm migrating my Snowy Fictions blog (hosted via Wordpress, Siteground) to Substack, which will free up funds and allow perhaps, better stock footage and music, as well as research materials! This process will take time.
I'm about to go overseas to the Baltic states and Rome - the perfect opportunity to further enrich my understanding of Christianity, European history, art, and to perhaps, engage more with the three pillars of Snowy Fictions: history, literature, and culture. This does mean no videos for the rest of 2025, however, I'm considering returning to video essays for the new year.
I hope you are all keeping well! I've been quite busy these past months, but I do have some content planned. But, I'd appreciate suggestions of what you'd like to see. Right now, I'm planning a few educational videos, an overview about languages in fantasy literature, and perhaps, a historical discussion about the Crusades. I'm currently creating two educational videos (ideally, posted before Easter Sunday) about Narratology and the Byzantine Commonwealth. The latter is particularly interesting concept, and I look forward to explaining it in detail. I know a few of you have requested content about medieval Russia and Byzantium - so I'm happy to provide this!
I'm currently working on an educational video about Gothic Revivalism! While this Church didn't make the script, I am fascinated by St. Antoine Catholic Church in Istanbul / Constantinople, Turkey. Built in the early 20th century, St. Antoine of Padua exists in a context of neo-Gothic and neo-medieval architecture across the world, taking cues from the grand Gothic churches like York Minster and Chartres Cathedral. I think this is a beautiful church, and one I hope to visit someday.
Also, when I visited Georgia (the country) last year in October, I went to an Orthodox monastery slightly outside of the capitol, Tbilisi. One building was Neo-Gothic, built in the 19th century, and designed by a French man! You can find spectacular examples of neo-Gothic architecture in the Americas, in South Asia, in Oceania, and in Europe. I make the point in my video that neo-Gothic made the Middle Ages more international and expansive. I'm excited to share it with you.

But for now, let us appreciate the magnificent architecture found in Europe. I'm quite fond of the city Vienna, with St Stephen's Cathedral, the grand museums, and the palaces.
