Wayanad district in Kerala has been struck by severe and devastating landslides caused by relentless rainfall. The disaster, which unfolded within just four hours, has resulted in at least 150 confirmed fatalities, with over 180 individuals still missing. The landslides primarily impacted the hilly regions near Meppadi, severely affecting the villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha.
The scale of the devastation is immense, prompting extensive rescue operations involving multiple agencies. The NDRF and Indian Army have deployed 225 personnel, including medical teams, while the Indian Air Force has engaged two helicopters—a Mi-17 and an ALH—to assist in the rescue efforts. Additionally, a Navy team is joining the rescue operations, and state Minister Veena George has been actively coordinating the response.
The calamity has led to the destruction of crucial infrastructure, including a key bridge in Chooralmala, which has severed vital connectivity to nearby towns. The situation is further complicated by continuous rainfall and the challenging terrain, which obstruct rescue and relief efforts.
In response, the Prime Minister's Office has pledged full support, including compensatory aid of Rs 2 lakh for bereaved families and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has organized a delegation of five ministers to oversee the relief operations, and a control room has been established to coordinate aid.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in northern Kerala, urging heightened caution for residents and visitors.
