A year ago on this day, I set off solo on an 800 km walk from France, across the revered Pyrenees, to Spain, a journey of 40 days on an adventure of a lifetime. I was scared and second guessed myself every step of the way, but then with one foot infront of another and spurned on by the spirit of adventure and the desire to clear my head and heart, I found myself again.
Lost I definitely did get a few times, and while there were darkness, chills, heat and rain, not to mention pain, I also found light, beauty, and human connection. Cut to a year later, I went on another 2 Caminos and now I am hooked. My friends and family don’t get it, but outside of work,family, some social life and everything in between, the Camino has become a calling. These 20 photos of my Camino Frances don’t quite do the job of capturing the hold the Camino and its 200 plus long distance routes have on me. As I plan my 2026 walk, I will try to put more words so that you will understand. I will vlog here on YouTube and write on Substack. Buen Camino! Life is imperfectly beautiful and things work out, they always do. 💚

These two montages of signs are the keen captures of a Matt Powell, a fellow pilgrim who is also a logo designer by profession. Takes a good eye to put them together in a way that is tres pleasing si!

It’s time for another #FashionOnTheCamino … If you want to know what to wear to hike an Autumn 🍂 Camino in Spain 🇪🇸, this might be it. This is me and Margaret (September 2024) looking too fresh faced to be too late in the day, so it’s early morning and we were walking into Burgos, a very long walk into Burgos on the Camino Frances.
We are pictured here at the main archaeological site called #Atapuerca, known for its rich fossil record of early humans in Europe. Bone fragments found at Atapuerca, particularly in the Gran Dolina cavern, date back around 800,000 years, making them the oldest known evidence of hominids settling in Western Europe.
The site is located in the Sierra de Atapuerca, about 20 kilometers northeast of the city of #Burgos. It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognised for its significance in understanding human evolution.

This is incredibly sad news. Portugal, likely Spain, and the entire global football community, no matter what colours would be in mourning right now. Having walked through both amazing countries recently, football is in the veins of young and old. YNWA. RIP and condolences to families, friends, Portugal and Liverpool fans.

I really like this blue door in the city of Santiago de Compostela. It’s a city that deserves a bit of time to let it permeate into your soul. Always try and stay a few nights at least in Santiago and explore it if you can after your Camino. Both times I have been there, I felt so rushed that the next time I am determined to stay 3 nights. There’s a lot of good bars and restaurants but they can be costly, only due to the high Euro currency vs the Australian dollar right now. Go local, take a siesta and stay up late and you will see many cool things in this special city. #Galicia #spain #camino

This was my view going on a quick morning walk before work today. Autumn (or fall as my North American viewers would say) is having a last hurrah before we get plunged into winter here. Last year I came home from the Camino Frances into Spring then summer, so my Camino tan lasted until now. This time I have come back to colder weather! Very different, but look at how pretty nature is.

Having bore witness to the unusual amount of rain and harsh conditions towards second half of my Camino, this flash floods though is on another level obviously, and I am so sad that so many lives have been claimed and so much suffering and destruction. I hope relief will come soon for Spain.
