Lionel Messi in 2010 did not win the Champions League or the World Cup, yet he still came out on top ahead of teammates like Xavi and Iniesta who had just won the biggest international prize. Fast forward to 2023 and Messi lifted the award again, this time without winning the Champions League, largely off the back of his World Cup performances. Michael Owen in 2001 and George Weah in 1995 are further examples of players who were recognized not because of the Champions League, but because of how special they were individually.
So how does Salah keep getting ignored? Season after season he breaks records, carries Liverpool, and does it in the toughest league in the world. If the award is really about the UCL, then plenty of past winners would not have had it. If it is about being the best player, Salah has done enough to deserve it. That is why it feels inconsistent and honestly unfair that he is still overlooked.
