Deepinfar ROV | Application Case – Detection of Seabed Scour Around Pile Foundations
Ocean currents continuously scour the seabed around the pile roots of offshore platforms, forming scour pits around the pile foundations. This reduces the embedded depth of the piles, impairs the stability of the overall structure, and poses significant potential safety hazards.
In an operation and maintenance project for an offshore oil and gas platform, Deepinfar's ROVs were deployed to inspect scour conditions surrounding underwater pile foundations. Following a workflow of "area scanning – hazard delineation – data calculation", the robots provided critical data support for safety assessment and maintenance of the pile foundations.
Scope of Operations:
✅ Locate Scour Zones
The ROV is equipped with a mechanical scanning sonar. It navigates around the pile foundations for full-area scanning to identify all scoured regions. 2D sonar images are generated to record the contours of the pile bodies and scour pits.
✅ Calculate Scour Sediment Volume
A 3D acoustic imaging device is used to construct a three-dimensional topographic map of the seabed. The length, width and depth of scour pits are extracted from the 3D model to accurately calculate the volume of sediment washed away by seawater.
This operation completed seabed topographic surveying and scour pit dimension measurement around the pile foundations. Accurate data collection paired with intuitive 2D and 3D imaging delivers reliable reference data for subsequent tasks: evaluating the current safety rating of pile foundations, developing anti-scour remediation plans, and monitoring the expansion rate of scour pits.

Offshore platform piles operating in harsh marine environments are often covered by marine growth such as barnacles and algae. These accumulations can obstruct visual inspection and reduce the accuracy of ultrasonic thickness measurement and cathodic protection (CP) surveys, making structural assessment and maintenance more challenging.
During an offshore oil and gas maintenance project in the Pacific Ocean, Deepinfar's ROV was deployed to carry out pile inspection and marine growth removal. Following an integrated inspection–cleaning–re-inspection workflow, the system provided reliable data to support subsequent structural integrity assessment.
Mission Highlights
✅ Full-Coverage Pile Inspection
The ROV performed a complete circumferential survey of the pile using an HD camera and imaging sonar to document surface conditions and marine growth distribution.
✅ Marine Growth Removal
Equipped with a cavitation jet cleaning system, the ROV efficiently removed barnacles, algae, and other marine growth, exposing clean surfaces for subsequent inspection.
✅ Structural Integrity Inspection
A UT thickness gauge was used to measure remaining wall thickness and assess corrosion-related material loss, while a CP probe measured cathodic protection potential to verify the condition of sacrificial anodes.
✅ Post-Cleaning Verification
After cleaning, the pile was re-inspected with optical and sonar sensors. The collected data was compared with pre-cleaning records to verify cleaning effectiveness and provide complete inspection documentation.The project successfully completed visual inspection, marine growth removal, wall thickness measurement, and cathodic protection surveys, delivering a comprehensive dataset to support the safety assessment and ongoing maintenance of offshore platform piles.
