What if electricity in your home wasn’t guaranteed? Today, 75% of U.S. homes without electricity are located within the Navajo Nation. Across a vast territory the size of West Virginia, thousands of families have lived without power or running water for over 50 years.

Now, a local Navajo community is driving a movement to bring energy independence back to their reservation. By combining modern solar and battery storage with deep cultural reverence for Johanoa’ei (the Sun), local leaders, engineers, and workers—many of them empowered Diné women—are installing off-grid systems that replace noisy generators and flashlights. Electrifying these homes provides more than just refrigeration and light for medical needs; it restores autonomy, safety, and sovereignty to the Navajo people.
