Where did the Black and Tan Gene Come From? 🐾

Ever wondered why "non-standard" colors like black and tan suddenly appear in Boerboels? Some might call it a recent "mix," but the science of genetics tells a different story. 🧬

In the early days of breed formation, breeders used "negative eugenics" to cull the nonconforming to "set" a specific look. If a color didn't fit the preferred "standard" (like fawn, red, or brindle), it was selected against. However, these genes didn't just vanish. They became hidden recessives.

Think of a gene pool like an army. In a diverse (heterogeneous) population, hidden recessive genes rarely meet. But as a breed becomes more homogeneous (sameness) due to closed registries and "cookie-cutter" breeding, these hidden genes are more likely to pair up and express themselves. It’s not that the color was "added" it was uncovered as the gene pool tightened.

The Boerboel was originally a functional farm dog. In the harsh South African bush, survival determined who procreated, not a written color standard. For centuries, these dogs were valued for their utility and loyalty, much like the ancient Africanis.

Closed registries never increase genetic diversity they only reduce it. When we disqualify healthy dogs based solely on "historically incorrect" colors, we risk genetic attrition throwing out "normal" genes that the breed needs to stay healthy and robust.

A "standard" is often just a human preference, but health is a biological necessity. By embracing the full genetic history of the Boerboel, we ensure a more robust, disease-resistant, and longer lived breed for the future. πŸ•βœ¨

🐢 Are you worth coming back to? 🐢
Building a reliable recall means ensuring your dog knows that returning to you is always a positive experience! Here are key tips to make sure your dog wants to run back to you:
β€’ Watch Your Tone: Would you want to approach someone who sounds angry? Use a happy, excited, and upbeat tone to call your dog.
β€’ Never Punish the Return: Scolding a dog when they finally return creates fear and teaches them that "Coming Back = Bad Things Happen." Always praise and reward them when they arrive, even if it took longer than it should have.
β€’ Don't Kill the Fun: If you only call your dog when it's time to leave the park, they learn that "Coming Back = Fun Is Ending." Call them to you during a walk, give them a reward, and then let them carry on exploring.
β€’ Avoid "White Noise": Repeatedly calling your dog causes them to lose interest. Instead, call once or twice, clap, whistle, or run in the opposite direction to encourage them to follow.
β€’ Set Them Up for Success: If your dog is distracted by an interesting scent, wait a bit before calling. Start practicing in low distraction environments (like inside) before moving to harder locations.
Always reward your dog for coming backβ€”make yourself the best thing in their world!

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL.

It can be disappointing when a dog doesn’t turn out to be the social butterfly we imagined. Many people assume dogs should naturally get along with other dogs simply because they’re the same species.

When that doesn’t happen, the label comes fast: unsocialized, problem dog, needs fixing.

Proper socialization matters. Timing matters. Experience matters.
But even when everything is done β€œright,” not every dog is meant to be highly social.

Some dogs are tolerant. Some are selective. Some prefer solitude.
That isn’t a failure it’s individuality.

Genetics, breed purpose, maturity, health, life experience, and age all shape a dog’s tolerance for social interaction. These traits also evolve over time. A dog that was playful at six months may become reserved at three years and that can be perfectly normal, especially in guardian and working breeds.

Humans don’t like everyone they meet.
We don’t get along with every personality.
We don’t force friendships just to meet social expectations.

So why do we demand that from dogs?

Not every disagreement, preference, or boundary is a problem.
Not every reserved dog needs to be β€œfixed.”

Once we’ve given our dogs the tools to navigate the world safely, our responsibility shifts. We stop forcing. We stop projecting. We start respecting.

Honor the individual.
Respect boundaries.
Calm, stable dogs don’t owe anyone friendliness.

Understanding creates better dogs and better handlers.

Master of early puppyhood development.
