In this session hosted by Wiki World Heritage, I was invited to share my work and experiences on “Understanding Heritage at Risk”.
As a conservation architect and urban researcher, I presented my framework on how 3D heritage visualization can serve as a catalyst for raising awareness, building emotional attachments, and safeguarding historic cities during and after conflict. Using the case of Damascus and my fieldwork since 2012 at the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums in Syria, I shared how students and communities can actively participate in protecting endangered heritage through education, visualization, and social media engagement.
Alongside me, Fatima, an inspiring Iraqi architect and researcher, presented her work on digital documentation and cultural healing through heritage. Together, our discussion highlighted the importance of community involvement, open knowledge platforms, and participatory methods for safeguarding heritage in conflict zones such as Syria and Iraq.
