Sharing from FamilyTree DNA: New Royal aDNA

FTDNA Research team recently analyzed data from a forthcoming study on royal burials from Hungary, allowing significant refinement of the House of Árpád branch structure.

King Béla II of Hungary was sampled, splitting R-ARP10, while an unknown male member of the royal family, SZKB58F, joins Saint Ladislaus I at R-ARP11. SZKB58F is a second-degree male-line relative of Ladislaus I.

These royal burials come from the Székesfehérvár royal necropolis, where more than 400 other elite individuals were also excavated.
The broader data from these additional burials are also forthcoming.

One newly analyzed individual, SZKB686F, was not part of the royal Árpád line, but branches off just upstream of it, splitting the gateway branch R-ARP5 before the House of Árpád continues downstream.

The updated Árpád structure is now:
R-ARP5 > R-ARP7 > R-ARP11 > R-FT353398 > R-ARP10

with R-ARP7 and R-FT353398 newly added to the path.
These results help narrow down the likely origins of several Árpád-line SNPs. R-FT353398 likely formed in the generation of Géza I, Prince Álmos, or Béla II, while R-ARP10 likely represents either Géza II or his son Béla III.

As part of the study, Béla of Macsó was also re-sequenced at higher coverage. Béla descended from the Árpáds maternally and from the Rurikids paternally, and his new result splits the Rurikid N-VL15 block as he is now confirmed ancestral for VL17. The lead SNP for this block has now been updated to N-VL16, since VL16 has coverage across all downstream samples.

The same data drop also included a female burial who shares significant IBD segments with burials associated with the House of Aba. Her mitochondrial DNA belongs to T2a1a30, a very rare maternal lineage also observed in Tsar Nicholas II.
