Even with a gun to my head, if you ask me, I think I would always choose a series over feature films or short films.

Maybe because series was what really gave us our big break, through Class of Secrets, over short films and feature films.

I would always choose it over any other form of filmmaking.

Reading Nollywood YouTube queen Ruth Kadiri saying that when she wanted to shoot a series and every fibre in her told her no.

She expressed her fear to her team, yet they went ahead and did it anyway, moved me.

Today, she is happy she took that courage, regardless of whether it fails or succeeds.

She also thanked her fans for sticking with her, and her series, Once Upon a Village, has been doing incredibly well.

According to YouTube Analytics the views on it are running 2 times higher than usual, more subscribers are choosing to watch it, and that consistency has been helping YouTube push it further through recommendations.

I am truly happy for her.

I understand that when you become too comfortable with a particular pattern, you naturally start developing negative instincts about anything outside that pattern.

For me, the reason I stick to series comes down to sustainability.

If you notice, I usually do not make my films around a lot of big name stars.

One thing I genuinely love series for is that it creates stars.

A number of actors we now recognise, especially from the YouTube space, majority of them came up through series and not single feature films.

I am not saying feature films cannot make someone famous, they absolutely can, but you have to appear in them consistently for that to happen.

A 20 episode series has far more chances of introducing and building a new star than a single feature film ever could.

This is simply because of how much time an audience spends with that face and character.

I recall Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson saying samething in a viral appearance on the podcast Million Dollaz Worth of Game.

His advice to filmmakers was, do not shoot a film, shoot a series.

His reasoning was that the traditional movie business has become too dependent on expensive, big name stars and just to guarantee returns within a narrow opening window at the box office.

A series, on the other hand, does not need that kind of celebrity firepower to work.

It survives on raw talent and character driven storytelling instead.

He pointed to his own executive produced shows, Power and BMF, as proof, both took relatively unknown actors and turned them into household names.

I am incredibly happy for Ruth, and I genuinely hope to see more series from her going forward.

And I imagine, this time around, the risk no longer frightens her the way it once did.

It is Monday and let me share a little secret about Nollywood.

The people currently among the biggest earners in this industry are not who most people assume oo!

It is the movie reviewers and film promoters.

Yes you heard right.

Earlier this year, I made a post advising people who want a slice of Nollywood's cake to consider starting a film promotion gig.

I can testify that a good number of people who took that seriously have since built something, and they are eating now.

The competition currently going on in this industry has turned movie reviewing and promotion into one of the most lucrative niches in Nollywood.

There are filmmakers releasing movies every single week now.

All of them need someone to service that output.

They need people to talk about it and keep it in front of an audience.

If you think I am exaggerating, go check the Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter pages of the movie reviewers you know.

Look at your favourite actors, actresses, and producers in their comment sections, engaging them and farming their attention.

The truth is that the relationship is not always mutual out of genuine friendship.

It is because these actors and producers, no matter how famous they already are, need what the reviewers and promoters offer.

So they have no choice but to slide into their inbox and build that relationship.

And it rarely stops at just being friendly, they always pay for the services.

I know a movie promoter personally who earns around ₦200,000 on average.

He posts about 4 videos a day, at ₦30,000 per post.

Multiply that by 7 days, and you get a clear picture of what he is pulling in weekly.

And there are others doing exactly the same thing, at similar numbers.

That is one good thing about Nollywood.

It can feed anyone, no matter where you are in the industry, as long as you have a loyal, engaged audience, and numbers behind you.

We are willing to pay for that reach, whether or not it directly converts because visibility itself has become the product we are buying.

So if you are still out there wondering what your entry point into Nollywood should be, December is almost here.

Top names in this industry will start dropping their films in cinemas and they will need the market.

They will need people to talk about the films, loudly and consistently.

You could be the next person waiting to get paid.

The competition is tougher now than it has ever been, which means everybody is hunting for new markets and new territory to stand out in.

Start something today because december is only a few months away.

And if you play it right, you might just find yourself eating on the top table too.

Do not say I did not teach you something today.
