This is what sociologist Eduardo Bonilla-Silva called colorblind racism. It's the belief that racism no longer matters while still reinforcing racial inequality through coded language, institutional silence, and individual denial. Think Chief Justice John Roberts saying, "The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race" in 2007.
They're not using slurs. They’re using dog whistles about values, culture, and attitude.
Imagine saying this to a Harvard grad who studied under some of the foremost scholars of Black life, history, and culture (not to mention all the other classes and experiences I had in college that transformed how I see the world).
I really wish more people would just admit: “I couldn't afford to study something simply because it excited me. Wealth inequality and the economy forced me to pick what the job market said was safe.”
We’d have a much healthier conversation about education in this country if we were more honest about how much fear drives the "useless degree" narrative. I understand that fear, but don't project that onto the Humanities Girlies who followed their curiosity and found purpose.
Last thing:
Black folks who use “affirmative action” as a slur are the weakest links. Affirmative Action built the Black middle class. Its rollback will decimate our collective progress.
