These Hills were once the roadbed of the Oklahoma Central Railroad the line was built between 1906 & 1908 between Lehigh & Chickasha, OK. It was primarily used to transport coal from the mines at Lehigh to Purcell, OK which was a Division point on the Santa Fe to service their Steam Locomotives. Other commodities the line carried included Cotton, Cotton By Products, Livestock & Building Materials. Unfortunately due to the Santa Fe converting their Steam Locomotives from coal to oil & a Coal Miners Strike in 1911 causing the Coal Mines to close the Railroad lost its primary source of revenue. The Railroad was acquired by the Santa Fe in 1914 & this section of the line between Byars & Purcell was abandoned in 1934.

This destroyed building is the old Santa Fe Depot in Stratford, OK. After the line it served on was abandoned in 1971 it was repurposed as the Stratford Town Hall until they moved out in the 2010’s. In 2019 it was saved from demolition by new owners & moved to its current location just off of US 177 just 3 Miles North of Stratford it was planned to be used as a Doctors Office. Unfortunately in May of 2025 2 months before my trip a storm swept through the area destroying many buildings & the depot was not spared. Today the Depot still exists albeit now in ruins.
