The Funding Gap: NASA has poured over $38.7 Billion of taxpayer money into the Space Launch System (SLS) architecture, while only providing $4 Billion in auxiliary funding for SpaceX's Starship human landing system development.
The Cost Per Launch: A single SLS flight demands an estimated $2.5 Billion in public funding. Meanwhile, Starship's private operational target is aiming to crush that down to around $90 Million per flight.
The Bottom Line: That means SLS consumes roughly 28x more NASA funding while Starship offers a projected 28x lower launch cost per mission due to full, rapid hardware reusability.
But numbers don't always tell the whole story. SLS is a fully certified, deeply reliable heavy-lifter that successfully executed Artemis I and is ready to push crewed Orion capsules into deep space right now.
