These little guys are unique amphibians that live their entire lives underwater! Native to Mexicoâs Lake Xochimilco, axolotls are known for their neoteny, meaning they retain larval features like external gills and a dorsal fin into adulthood. Theyâre famous for their extraordinary regenerative abilities, able to regrow limbs, spinal cord, and even parts of their heart and brain. As pets, they need cool, dechlorinated water 15-20ËC (60-68ËF), minimal current, and a bare-bottom or sand-lined tank to prevent injury. They then to prefer the dark, so provide them with plenty of hiding spaces. With a diet of high-protein foods like earthworms and pellets, and proper care, axolotls can live over 10 years. Who can resist that silly little smile?
The mighty muskie isnât called the âFish of 10,000 Castsâ for nothing. It takes a reel-y determined angler to hook one! These North American native speedy torpedoes can hit 30 mph, ambushing prey with jaw-dropping precision. Speaking of jaws, their razor-sharp teeth make quick work of fish, frogs, and even the occasional unlucky duck! Theyâre not afraid of a little fin cannibalism either. With chameleon-like camouflage and Hulk-sized leaps, they put up a fight thatâs nothing short of legendary. Some muskies even outlive their fishermen, reaching 30+ years old!
