The ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Indore was the first international match to be called off because of an unsafe pitch. Sri Lanka chose to bat but appealed to the umpires as early as the third over, to the annoyance of the local Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association officials.

English run machine Alastair Cook, born today, exploded into Test cricket at 20 with a hundred against India in 2006, cemented his spot with back-to-back hundreds against Pakistan the same year, and scored seven Test hundreds by his 23rd birthday. In the 2010-11 Ashes he made 766 runs in seven innings to set up England's first win in Australia in 24 years. In 2012, Cook took over as Test captain, and led the side to a historic series win in India, where he also became England's leading Test century-maker and the youngest player to pass 7000 runs.

We loved his bowling run-up with super swing & pace as much as we loved his athletic fielding. What amazed us most was his batting skills, @HomeOfCricket knows this.
On this day, Rajkot '00
@imAagarkar scored a glorious 21 ball 5️⃣0️⃣, yet an 🇮🇳 record.

He's best remembered for his savage pyjama-clad willow wielding in the 1992 World Cup, but the burly New Zealander Mark Greatbatch, who was born today, was more than just the original pinch-hitter. He could knuckle down when needed, though ironically for a man who saved a Test in Perth with an 11-hour 146, it was a habitual weakness against fast bowling (only one of his 125 international appearances came against West Indies) that ultimately cost him his place.

A one-day tie in Perth, in the first match of that season's World Series Cup. India looked dead in the water when they were shot out for 126 by West Indies, with Curtly Ambrose taking 2 for 9 from 8.4 overs... but India returned the compliment. Kapil Dev removed Desmond Haynes with the first ball of the innings, then Subroto Banerjee took 3 for 30. Mohammad Azharuddin bowled out his four main bowlers, and had to turn to Sachin Tendulkar with the last pair in. He obliged with the last wicket with the scores level - top scorer Andy Cummins (24), well caught by Azhar himself. It was West Indies' second ODI tie in a fortnight.

29 required to win off 18 balls.
Ajit Agarkar alone smashed 26* off 12 to secure the win against Sri Lanka in the opening game of Coca Cola Champions Trophy at Sharjah, 1998. He also have good time with ball in this game
Happy Birthday @imAagarkar

Birth of the man who lifted the World Cup for Sri Lanka. Arjuna Ranatunga was a wristy left-hander with his fair share of attitude, but he knitted a flashy side into a fighting unit, which took the world by storm in 1996. Fittingly, Ranatunga was there to hit the winning runs against Australia in the final in Lahore. He made his debut as a chubby teenager, in Sri Lanka's first ever Test, and bowed out as a tubby thirtysomething after playing in their 100th match.

Birth of that pocket dynamo Romesh Kaluwitharana, who revolutionised one-day cricket when he and Sanath Jayasuriya took pinch-hitting to a new level in the mid-1990s, playing a shot a ball right from the off. Successful though the pair generally were, Kaluwitharana was also the subject of one of cricket's greatest myths. Legend has it that he and Jayasuriya set the 1996 World Cup alight with a series of blazing partnerships. Not so. Kaluwitharana made only 73 runs in the whole tournament, though at least he did not hang around - those runs took only 52 balls, and in the semi-final he and Jayasuriya were both caught at third man (Kaluwitharana first ball) in the first over. He was inevitably a hit-and-miss player (his one-day average did not hit 20 until his 123rd match) but though not reliable, Kalu was never less than entertaining.

A real shock in Lahore, where New Zealand's herd of allrounders snatched a 44-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test. It looked unlikely when they were cleaned up for 155 on the first day, but a chalk-and-cheese partnership from Stephen Fleming (92 not out in almost five hours) and Chris Cairns (93 off 89) second time round helped them set Pakistan a target of 276. Pakistan went to pieces, slipping to 60 for 6 before Mohammad Wasim, on debut, struck a fine unbeaten century to bring them within range. At 211 for 7 things were getting tense, but Dipak Patel broke the habit of a lifetime by demolishing the tail. It was New Zealand's first Test win in 15 matches, and their first in Pakistan for 27 years.https://youtu.be/GfwMHxChnyM

His batting was blessed with discipline, temperament, elegance & sheer hard work. He could blunt & score off bowling attacks for hours in 90s. A wonderful coach who always believed in “process”.
A 🇿🇦 legend
Happy Birthday Gary Kirsten
