I know I could talk forever about the amazing performances, humor, and all around mesmerizing presence of Tim Curry, but after hearing about his passing, I can't think of anything except his autobiography I read recently. On top of being a wonderful story from a wonderful artist, he put a lot of focus on a life philosophy that really spoke to me: explore your contradictions.

Growing up I remember so many people telling me how most of the world works in either one way or another, yet I always found myself playing devil's advocate questioning how absolutely certain anything was. I turned this inward and would question constantly what my thoughts and feelings were about myself and why I thought this way. I've become more comfortable with how many things about the world around me and my own mind I will never fully understand, and perhaps the best way to both comprehend that more while also getting more lost in it is to follow Curry's advice.

I never realized that's what I was doing until I read his memoir. I loved always hearing something and, not necessarily trying to prove it false, but just exploring the opposite to see what it says about me or the way many of us view reality. It's such a simple practice and, because nobody is perfect, every single one of us has contradictions. We'll say or even think one way but deep down the opposite is bubbling. Sometimes we know why, other times it's a mystery, but it's a mystery that leads to a fascinating journey even if you never figure out all the answers.

Curry brought his own contradictions to his roles, which is maybe why he played villains so wonderfully, but could also play sympathetic characters so well too. He always loved trying to find empathy for whatever character he played, which helped balance out his big and bombastic performances, but also allowed him to show a more vulnerable side as well. I know this isn't the rundown of craziest moments or funniest line deliveries some of you might have been expecting, but I think his book really does show there was a lot of thought behind not just his performances, but the performer as well.

I remember when I was younger I wasn't a fan of country music (I think the overexposure of 'Achy Breaky Heart' turned many away from it), but even during that time I loved Dolly Parton's songs. Whenever someone brought that up I would say "Well she's not really country, she's...something better." Well I was half right, she is something better, but she is also unmistakably country music.

She's the heart, evolution, and emotional core of everything that's great about it. As an adult I've opened up more to it, and much of that is from Dolly's amazing sound. The number of inspiring stories, charming interviews, and wise words surrounding this woman are too many to count. She's been underestimated by many, yet always cheerfully leapt at the opportunity to prove them wrong.

A great talent, a great artist, and a great human being will be missed.
