Man things can change in a heartbeat! This time of year can be really special and once you add in this incredible hunting weather we’re having, it just multiplies the odds of success.
Hunting this 15 acre property, the trick was not to hunt it anymore than I needed to and strike when I had the intel I needed! We had rain and high winds for 4 days straight here in Kansas and yesterday evening it was going to break and that’s the time to strike.
He came in grunting at last light heading towards a few younger bucks and gave me a “perfect” 10 yard shot, big buck doing big buck things he stopped behind a small tree. He was acting a little edgy so I didn’t want to wait too long and chance it, I held as tight to the tree as I could and let it rip. Perfect heart shot.
Spent the day with a client getting his new blind set up and tucked into the screening cover that we planted in the spring!
This clover and chicory food plot has been getting hammered with deer pressure and is producing the biggest bucks on property so far. The food plot butts up against a giant CRP bedding area and has a ditch separating it and an 8 acre sorghum field that we planted as well. Scrape lines are popping up along the edge. This is going to be a killer location for them.
The screen is a mix of Egyptian Wheat, Pearl Millet and Sorghum.
Even with some extremely heavy grazing pressure. This clover is really taking shape!
This client property is in more of an urban environment, which means deer density is very high and food availability is low. Making it a little difficult to get plots established! The rain we’ve been getting this spring has helped dramatically. Once established clover & chicory are very grazing tolerant!
Screening cover on multiple client properties are germinating and taking shape! This annual mix of pearl millet, hybrid sorghum & Egyptian wheat will grow anywhere from 8’-12’ tall. Planting an annual like this is a great option to get a great screen immediately, as your switchgrass is establishing itself.
Being able to control your access to this extent and create the opportunities to increase your odds of success is the biggest difference from private land to public land! Having a thorough understanding of the basics and the WHY behind it all, is what separates those who get it done consistently on both public and private.
Those who’ve followed me for a while know that I’m an avid public land guy. This experience has given me a unique understanding of how deer respond to human intrusion and has in turn lead to the success my clients have had on their properties!
Here’s a 2.5 month transformation picture from a client of mine in central Missouri! Back in March I came in with a chainsaw to open up and create this new food plot to help create more diversity on this big woods property. We got the seed in well before the tree canopy filled in to allow for as much sunlight as possible and this hidden food plot is doing exceptionally well.
This hidden plot is part of a larger plan for this property and is created to not only enhance deer movement, but it’s also set up in a manner that doesn’t negatively affect the access and hunting throughout the rest of the property.
It’s very important to have a plan before embarking on major projects!
Recently I had a client send me pictures of these 2 bucks that he’s keeping an eye on. Both are off to a VERY good start and have the makings of being something real special this season. The tall heavy buck he definitely has a couple years of sheds off of and the wide buck is a regular who I saw a few weeks back one evening while planting food plots.
I love seeing the excitement my clients have for their projects and also seeing the deer respond to the plan that we’ve put developed for their property is what it’s all about. THIS is why I do what I do!!
Last week was a fantastic week, we’ve been full steam ahead right into spring planting season! Between consulting clients, a new outfitting lease and a second year planting evaluation from one of last year consulting clients, I evaluated over 1,400 acres in a 7 day stretch. From Mid Missouri, Eastern Kansas and North Central Kansas. Terrain and vegetation was not only very different from property to property, but they also had their similarities as well.
Consulting season is coming to a close and the final Blueprints are heading out to clients!
