Machon Shilo - Torah Reading
"בזעת אפיך תאכל לחם"
By the sweat of your brow you shall eat bread
At the end of this week's Sidra, we learn that humankind was cursed by being required to work. The need to work is a curse, not the work itself. One should find work that he enjoys and that will give him fulfilment.
One should have in mind to help society and mankind through his work thereby fulfilling the words of Rabbi in Avoth chapter 2 mishna 1:
רַבִּי אוֹמֵר, אֵיזוֹהִי דֶרֶךְ יְשָׁרָה שֶׁיָּבֹר לוֹ הָאָדָם, כֹּל שֶׁהִיא תִפְאֶרֶת לְעוֹשֶׂיהָ וְתִפְאֶרֶת לוֹ מִן הָאָדָם.
Rabbi Said: which is the straight path that a man should choose for himself? One which is an honor to the person adopting it, and [on account of which] honor [accrues] to him from others.
Remember that this need to work is a curse from God, which means no matter how many hours you put in, no matter how much money you make, you will still need to work. Just take a look at Elon Musk for example.
That being the case, don't glorify the curse. Don't be a workaholic. Don't get me wrong, when you are at work, work your hardest and put your whole being in what you do, but then when the day is over, come home and as hard as it may be, disconnect. Have faith in God that He will fulfill your needs and take time to simply enjoy the blessings in your life.
Glorify the wonderful blessing that God has granted you and the Torah and commandments that we have been blessed to receive.
