For the Lunar New Year, red fills our homes — in decorations, envelopes, and lanterns.
農曆新年期間，紅色充滿家家戶戶 —— 紅包、春聯、燈籠，都承載著祝福。


In painting, red must be handled carefully. Too much, and it becomes loud. Controlled, it becomes powerful.
在繪畫中，紅色更需要節制。
過多則躁動，掌握得當則沉穩而有力量。


Notice how the strong red field allows the flowers and vessel to glow. The intensity is balanced by structure.
強烈的紅色背景，使花與器皿更顯光彩；
熱烈之中，仍需結構的支撐。


May this year be bold — but disciplined.
Passionate — but grounded.

On the third day of the Lunar New Year, we welcome abundance with flowers.
農曆新年的第三天，以花迎春，迎接豐盛與希望。


In traditional Chinese culture, blossoms symbolize renewal, growth, and the promise of prosperity. But in painting, flowers are not about detail — they are about rhythm. Notice how the red and violet strokes sit against muted earth tones. The life of the painting comes from contrast.
在傳統文化中，花象徵新生、成長與興旺。但在繪畫裡，花不只是花瓣的描繪，而是節奏的安排。紅與紫的筆觸，在沉穩的土色之中跳動，生命力來自色彩之間的對比與關係。


When painting flowers, I do not chase petals.
I chase color relationships.
畫花，不是追逐細節，
而是掌握色彩的平衡。

Despite the chaos in the world, and the rapid development of AI that continues to reshape businesses and daily life, here at Twin Bridge Studio in Taipei we remain deeply grateful for a peaceful corner of the world where Mr. Yim and his students can continue to practice classical drawing, oil painting, and pastel—and find immense joy and quiet fulfillment in the process.
儘管世界局勢動盪不安，人工智慧的快速發展也持續改變著產業與人們的日常生活，在台北的雙橋畫室，我們依然心懷感恩——在這個世界的一隅，仍有一方寧靜的角落，讓冉茂芹老師與他的學生們能夠持續專注於古典素描、油畫與粉彩的練習，並從中獲得深刻的喜悅與內在的安定。


We are thankful that Mr. Yim is still in good health (more or less) and continues teaching on Mondays and Tuesdays at the age of 83. After taking a hiatus from teaching at the end of last year due to health concerns and hospital stays, he recovered quickly and returned to the studio—first teaching a single class, and then fully resuming his regular schedule of two classes (morning and evening). This year’s curriculum includes portrait drawing, pastel portrait, and oil portrait.
我們也感恩冉老師目前身體尚稱硬朗，在 83 歲的年紀，仍持續於每週一與週二授課。去年年底，冉老師因健康因素與住院治療暫停教學一段時間，所幸恢復情況良好，很快便重返畫室——先從一堂課開始，隨後全面恢復原本早、晚各一堂的正常教學節奏。今年的教學內容涵蓋肖像素描、粉彩肖像，以及油畫肖像。


In the spring, Mr. Yim held a solo exhibition at Apollo Gallery’s Hengchun office in southern Taiwan. In September, the studio welcomed a group of artists from Hong Kong who traveled to Taipei to study with Mr. Yim for a short period. More recently, he conducted a still life and portrait oil painting workshop at Chuanghe Studio in Zhanghua, Taiwan. Guangxi Fine Arts Publishing also released a new edition of The Sketch Handbook this year.
今年春天，冉老師於南台灣恆春的恆.好藝術空間舉辦了個展。九月間，畫室也迎來一批自香港專程前來台北、短期進修的藝術家。近期，冉老師亦於彰化的創禾畫室主持靜物與肖像油畫工作坊。此外，廣西美術出版社今年再版了《速寫手帖》。


In addition, we launched an online academy (yimmaukun.podia.com), which will house all existing and future courses, course notes, articles, and process images, and serve as a growing library of Mr. Yim’s teaching. We are also planning a solo exhibition at Apollo Gallery in Taipei from March 7 to April 7, 2026.
同時，我們也正式啟動線上學院（yimmaukun.podia.com），未來將彙整所有既有與即將推出的課程、課程講義、文章與創作過程影像，逐步建構成一座完整呈現冉老師教學體系的數位典藏庫。我們亦計畫於 2026 年 3 月 7 日至 4 月 7 日，在台北阿波羅畫廊舉辦冉老師的個展。


All in all, we are grateful for the opportunity to continue drawing and painting alongside fellow artists who share a deep passion for art and the simple joy of practice.

Sketching Is Not About Speed — It’s About Accuracy

Many people turn sketching into a speed competition.
But mature sketching has never been about being fast.

Yim Mau-Kun repeatedly emphasizes:
You must first learn to draw slowly before you can draw fast.

If proportions are wrong and structure is unclear, speed means nothing.
Sketching trains:

Observation
Judgment
Simplification
Decision-making

Slow down, and you’ll notice:
your lines gain weight,
your figures begin to stand firmly.

但真正成熟的速寫，從來不是越快越好。

◎ Objects inherently have volume and shape as their primary characteristics, and only light makes them visible.
◎ 物體本身具有體積，形狀為主，只有光線才將它們顯現出來。
◎ The volume and shape characteristics of various objects have their own structural patterns. The primary task of drawing is to address these structural patterns. This explains why the German school of painting, which emphasizes "lines," and the French school of painting, which emphasizes "light and shadow," both achieve extraordinarily beautiful effects (this does not refer to modern schools of painting).
◎ 各種物體的體積、形狀的特徵都具有其本身之結構規律，素描首要解決的就是此結構規律。由此可以解釋德國畫派的以「線條」為主的表現手法，和法蘭西畫派的以「明暗」為主的表現手法均能達到極美效果的原因（這還不是指現代畫派）。
◎ Sketching objects in terms of planes has a direct relationship with transitioning into oil painting. Therefore, while paying attention to structure, one must observe, discern, and perceive "planes."
