Embargo Blocks Drone Cameras for Turkey, But It Builds a Better System.
Canada restricted and later fully embargoed the export of critical electro-optical and infrared camera/sensor systems (mainly L3Harris Wescam MX-15 series) to Turkey.
These systems were used on platforms such as the Bayraktar TB2 and other drones built by Baykar and TAI.The restrictions started around 2019 (linked to Turkey’s operations in Syria) and tightened sharply in 2020 after Canadian equipment on Turkish drones appeared in Azerbaijan’s use during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Canada suspended and then cancelled the relevant export permits.
Turkey responded by rapidly developing its own alternatives. Aselsan created the Common Aperture Targeting System (CATS), which was successfully tested, integrated onto Bayraktar TB2s and other platforms, and entered service with Turkish forces.
CATS has also been exported to multiple countries.Aselsan later produced more advanced systems, including the ASELFLIR-500 (and related models).
Turkish officials and Baykar state these outperform the earlier foreign cameras in range, resolution and other key metrics (claims of roughly 20–30 % improvement). The ASELFLIR-500 has been tested on the Akıncı UCAV and other platforms.
In 2025 Aselsan unveiled the Aselflir-600 (developed with Baykar), described as a further leap — “a telescope flying in the sky” — offering over 30 % greater viewing distance and laser-designation range than previous systems.
Officials openly frame these developments as a direct response to the embargoes, with comments such as “We can build something even better.”
The restrictions on cameras (and other components) accelerated Turkey’s drive for higher domestic content in its UAVs/SIHAs, reduced external dependence, and helped turn the country into a significant exporter of both complete drones and indigenous electro-optical systems.
Newer Turkish production for domestic use and many export customers now relies primarily or fully on local cameras.

If a NATO country (like Turkey) is directly attacked by Israel on its own territory, Article 5 could be triggered.
That means an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all.However, NATO members are not forced to go to war. Each country decides how (or whether) to help — it could be intelligence, defensive systems, or just political support.
Full military action against Israel is very unlikely because the United States is Israel’s closest ally and other members have their own interests.Israel is not a NATO member, so it has no Article 5 protection itself.Bottom line:
A formal request for help is possible, but real military support against Israel should not be expected.

Turkey’s KAAN fighter jet is now about 90% locally made.Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) chief Mehmet Demiroğlu said this in late August 2026. He called KAAN the most indigenous prototype Turkey has built so far.

Apart from the engine and ejection seat, nearly everything else is either already made in Turkey or will be localized on the next prototypes.

What’s still importedEngine: Early aircraft use the American GE F110. Turkey is developing its own TF35000 engine and aims to start using it around 2032.

Ejection seat: Currently supplied by Britain’s Martin-Baker. A Turkish version is in the works but not ready yet.

Quick program updateKAAN is Turkey’s homegrown fifth-generation fighter. The first prototype flew in 2024. More prototypes are now in taxi tests and final assembly.

Turkey plans to start flying several of them together for testing soon, with the first production jets expected to enter service in the late 2020s.Once the local engine is ready, officials say the plane will be fully Turkish-made.
