Türkiye Prepares to Launch Its First Homegrown Lunar Spacecraft in 2027
Türkiye is preparing to take a major step in its space program with the planned launch of its first domestically developed lunar spacecraft in early 2027 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The spacecraft, developed under Türkiye’s Lunar Research Program, is approximately 3.5 metric tons and reportedly features more than 80% domestically produced components. It is equipped with a locally developed hybrid propulsion system designed to support orbital maneuvers and controlled deceleration during its journey to the Moon.
After launch, the spacecraft is expected to take around two months to reach lunar orbit, where it will operate in a circular orbit approximately 100 kilometers above the Moon’s surface.
The primary scientific mission is planned to last at least three months, although it could potentially be extended to as long as 18 months. At the end of the mission, the spacecraft is expected to make a controlled descent toward the lunar surface.
Scientific Mission
The spacecraft will carry out several scientific investigations, including:
Studying how solar wind interacts with the lunar surface
Investigating processes that may contribute to water formation on the Moon
Measuring the Moon’s magnetic field and thermal properties
Conducting local radiation measurements using domestically developed instruments
The spacecraft has now completed its manufacturing phase and has entered system-level environmental testing at Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) ahead of its planned launch from Florida.
If successful, the mission would mark a significant milestone for Türkiye's growing space capabilities and its ambitions to conduct independent lunar exploration.

On September 14, 2026, U.S. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink publicly stated that the Space Force now operates “on-orbit space control weapons” capable of defending American and allied forces against hostile actions in space.
This was the first official confirmation by a senior U.S. official that the United States has deployed actual weapon systems into orbit.Speaking at the Air & Space Forces Association conference, Meink said: “This is why the United States now has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action.” He offered no further details on the number of systems, their exact nature (kinetic or non-kinetic), or how they work.In Space Force doctrine, “space control” covers both offensive and defensive counterspace operations.
These include: Offensive measures such as #orbital #strike (disrupting or disabling adversary satellites) and interference with their communications links.
Defensive measures to protect U.S. and friendly satellites, ranging from active countermeasures to passive resilience.
The announcement comes after years of #U.S. warnings about #Chinese and #Russian counterspace activities. While ground-based electronic warfare systems had previously been acknowledged, this marks the first public admission of weapons already operating in orbit. Nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction remain prohibited under the Outer Space Treaty.

When asked whether his parachute had deployed after ejecting from the damaged F-15E, Bravo revealed one of the most terrifying moments of the entire ordeal.
His parachute had been damaged during the initial attack. At one point, as he looked up, there was no fully deployed parachute above him.
“That was the most terrifying thing I've ever seen,” he recalled.
While falling toward the ground, Bravo said he briefly stopped and prayed: “Lord, your will be done, but if I'm getting through this, I need help.”
He described the experience as essentially free-falling. Rather than focusing on how fast he was descending, he concentrated on trying to fix the damaged parachute, pulling and loosening whatever parts he could.
His survival training immediately took over. Through SERE—Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape—training, he had learned to work through problems under extreme pressure and never become a victim of his circumstances.
That mindset became critical.
According to medical professionals who later assessed his injuries and his account of the fall, Bravo may have struck the ground at 70 to 100 miles per hour.
Yet he survived.
“A modern-day miracle,” is how Bravo described it.
The impact left him with a broken back, broken arm, broken shoulder and a sprained ankle, along with cuts and bleeding to his head and face.
Despite his injuries, he immediately moved away from the crash site as quickly as he could.
But surviving the fall was only the beginning.
Soon afterward, Iranian media announced a bounty for the capture of the American airmen, while videos began appearing online showing armed groups searching for the downed crew.
Bravo now had to survive not only his injuries and the harsh mountainous terrain—but also an active hunt by Iranian forces.

Claim: Saudi-Operated Turkish KARAYEL UAV Shot Down Over Yemen
Yemen’s Houthi movement claims it has shot down a Turkish-made KARAYEL armed UAV operated by Saudi Arabia over Hajjah province.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said the drone was targeted and brought down by air-defense units while operating in the area.
The Houthis have also released footage showing wreckage that they claim belongs to the downed KARAYEL UAV. The claim and the identity of the wreckage have not been independently verified.

Turkey and Egypt are studying Egypt’s potential participation in the KAAN fifth-generation fighter program.
Ankara and Cairo have been advancing talks on Egypt joining Turkey’s indigenous KAAN (formerly TF-X) stealth fighter project, with discussions focused on possible co-production, technology transfer, and manufacturing roles.
The KAAN, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), is a twin-engine fifth-generation multirole fighter that completed its maiden flight in February 2024. Boeing Finds Hundreds of Cracks on Next Air Force One Jets as Costs Soar Past $3 Billion
Boeing is repairing hundreds of microscopic cracks discovered in structural stringers on the two Boeing 747-8 aircraft being transformed into the next VC-25B Air Force One aircraft.
The latest repairs add another challenge to the already troubled presidential aircraft program, which has suffered major delays and cost overruns. Boeing has now recorded approximately $3.13 billion in cumulative charges on the project.
Around 300 Cracks Found on Each Aircraft
The cracks were discovered in longitudinal structural stringers running along the aircraft fuselage. These components help reinforce the aircraft’s structure.
According to reports, approximately 300 stringer cracks were identified on each of the two aircraft. The defects have been linked to manufacturing issues, including improper shimming and gaps around splice locations during the aircraft’s original production.
Similar cracking issues have reportedly been identified elsewhere across the wider 747-8 fleet.
Boeing is carrying out repairs in accordance with FAA-approved procedures. U.S. Air Force officials have stated that the cracks do not currently pose a safety threat and are not considered a major risk to the revised delivery schedule.
As of late July 2026, the first VC-25B had approximately 21 repairs remaining, while work on the second aircraft had already completed replacements on 104 of roughly 300 identified locations.
Boeing Absorbing Billions in Overruns
The VC-25B program is being carried out under a fixed-price contract signed in 2018. As a result, Boeing is responsible for absorbing most of the additional costs rather than passing them directly to U.S. taxpayers.
The company’s cumulative charges on the program have now reached approximately $3.13 billion, including a further $280 million charge in the second quarter of 2026.
The additional costs have been driven by engineering work, quality issues, production challenges and certification requirements.
Air Force One Delivery Delayed Until 2028
The first new VC-25B is now expected to be delivered around mid-2028, roughly four years later than the original late-2024 target.
The program has faced a long list of challenges, including design modifications, wiring problems, supplier difficulties, pandemic-related disruptions and the complexity of converting two existing 747-8 aircraft into highly customized presidential jets.
The aircraft will feature sophisticated communications equipment, defensive systems and other specialized technologies required for the President of the United States.
Despite the latest structural repairs and massive cost overruns, officials say Boeing is making steady progress and that the program remains on track for the revised 2028 delivery timeline.

Greece and Israel Seal $3.5 Billion Air Defense Deal to Build “Achilles Shield”
Greece and Israel have signed a landmark $3.5 billion (€3 billion) defense agreement to develop a new multi-layered air and missile defense network known as the “Achilles Shield.” The deal, signed in Tel Aviv on August 31, 2026, is reportedly the largest defense export agreement in Israel’s history.
The system is expected to become fully operational within 35 months, potentially by mid-2029, giving Greece a much more comprehensive shield against aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missile threats.
Three-Layer Israeli Defense Network
At the heart of the program are three major Israeli air defense systems:
David’s Sling – Designed to intercept ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and long-range rockets. Greece would become only the second foreign operator of the system after Finland.
SPYDER – Provides short- to medium-range protection against aircraft, helicopters, drones and other low-altitude threats.
Barak MX – Designed to counter fighter aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and other aerial threats.
The package will also include advanced surveillance radars and an AI-enabled national command-and-control system developed by Rafael, allowing the different defense layers to operate as an integrated network.
Greece is also pursuing a separate €26 million deal for Israel’s Drone Dome counter-drone systems, adding another layer of protection against increasingly sophisticated unmanned threats.
Technology Transfer and Greek Industry
The agreement includes technology transfers and industrial cooperation involving more than a dozen Greek defense companies. The partnership is expected to strengthen Greece’s domestic defense industry while deepening military and technological ties between Athens and Tel Aviv.
However, the deal has also triggered controversy in Greece.
One of the major concerns is that Israel will reportedly retain control of the source code for the central command-and-control system. Critics argue that this could limit Greece’s ability to independently modify or control a critical part of its national air defense architecture.
The issue has fueled a political debate over sovereignty, operational independence and the long-term cost of the system.
Why the Deal Matters
The Achilles Shield represents a major step in Greece’s military modernization strategy as Athens seeks to strengthen its defenses against a growing range of aerial and missile threats in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The agreement also further deepens the strategic defense relationship between Greece and Israel, while highlighting the growing importance of integrated air defense systems in modern warfare.
