FAMILY SERIES: MARRIAGE, A COVENANT OF LIFE
Ephesians 5:25 (KJV):* “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it.”
Marriage is a covenant.
Throughout Scripture, we learn that covenants are sacred bonds established before God.
In biblical times, covenants were often sealed with blood, symbolizing the seriousness, permanence, and cost of the commitment. Blood represented life.
This means that at the heart of the marriage covenant is the laying down of one’s life for another.
This is why Scripture points us to Christ as the ultimate example. Jesus did not love the Church sentimentally. He gave Himself and lay down His life for his bride.
In the same way, marriage calls both husband and wife to die to selfishness and pride for the good of the other and for the preservation of the union.
It means choosing daily to love in a way that reflects Christ—patiently, faithfully, and sacrificially.
When a couple understands covenant, they move from “What can I get?” to “What can I give?”
