NVIDIA’s “Robotic AI Radio”: Is AI-RAN Changing the Role of Telecom Engineers?

At GTC 2026 in California, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang introduced what he calls “Robotic AI Radio.” The idea is simple but powerful. The Radio Access Network is no longer only for connectivity. It is becoming a distributed AI compute platform.
NVIDIA is working with T-Mobile and Nokia to embed GPUs directly into RAN infrastructure. This allows cell sites and mobile switching centers to handle two things at once:

* Radio frequency signal processing to improve network performance
* Real-time AI inference at the edge -supporting real-time AI workloads that interact with the physical world.

The core problem this solves is clear.
Physical AI systems such as autonomous vehicles, robotics, and smart city platforms generate massive real-time data. Sending this data to the cloud introduces delay. That delay is not acceptable in real-world operations.
A robot or drone cannot wait for cloud processing before making a decision.
So the computer must move closer to where the data is generated. That means the edge.

Why Some 5G Antennas Are Mounted Horizontally

If you see panel antennas mounted horizontally on a tower, it looks like an installation error. It is not.

This is a deliberate RF decision used to solve specific coverage and capacity problems in real networks.

A standard panel antenna is installed vertically. In this image position, it delivers a wide horizontal beam, about 65 degrees, and a narrow vertical beam, around 7 to 10 degrees. This setup is ideal for covering users spread across the ground.

When you rotate the antenna by 90 degrees, the radiation pattern rotates with it. The wide beam shifts to the vertical plane, and the narrow beam shifts to the horizontal plane.

This creates a narrow horizontal focus and a wide vertical spread.

Engineers use this in three key scenarios:

1. High-rise coverage
Users sit across many floors. A narrow vertical beam misses most of them. After rotation, the wide vertical beam covers multiple floors at once, while the narrow horizontal beam limits interference to nearby sites.

2. Capacity at crowded events
This method splits one wide sector into several narrow beams. It increases capacity in stadiums and large events without deploying new antenna types.

3. Interference control
A narrow horizontal beam reduces signal spill into neighboring cells. This improves performance in dense urban areas.

There are trade-offs.

MIMO performance drops due to weaker cross-polarization.
PIM risk increases from mechanical stress.
Planning tools do not model this setup well.
Wind load changes affect mounting stability.
Electrical tilt loses effectiveness.
Vendors do not support this configuration.

Because of these limits, this is not standard practice.

Modern networks use Massive MIMO and beamforming to handle these challenges with better precision and control.

The key lesson is simple.

The antenna does not change.
The radiation pattern rotates.
Understanding when to apply this makes the difference in real deployments.

Adding Multiple Data VLANs On Cambium Radio For Multiple Services.

1. Login to the radio
2. Locate configuration tab
3. From the drop down on the congratulation tab click the network tab
4. Disable the data vlan
5. Add membership vlan
6. The membership vlan as start and end
7. Input the needed vlan from the start to the end. E.g: start vlan 22 and end vlan 22. If you multiple VLANs just had them one by one from start to finish.
8. Save
